Greatest Romances in the History of Comics: When we think about superheroes and comics, we tend to think about superpowers, action, adventure. But often forget that these heroes too have a personal life. They also seek for togetherness in life. When there is a need for togetherness and companionship. There will be love and romance. So here are a few great romantic stories from the world of comics that will mesmerize you.
Superman and Lois Lane
Superman and Lois Lane are one of the most iconic couples of the comics world. The duo have had a perfect love story which has been full of ups and downs. Superman’s alter ego ‘Clark Kent’ happens to be Lane’s colleague. The duo share a friendly relationship. Where Clark has feelings for Lois but Lois feels for Clark’s alter ego ‘Superman’. This forms a love triangle which involves only two individuals. However, with time Lois fell for the normal man (Kent). Later came to know that the two choices which had complicated her love life, were the same person. In the comics, Superman and Lois Lane have been happily married. With a few problems here and there, they remain a happy couple.
Spider-Man and Mary Jane
In the modern times, Spider-Man and Mary Jane can be considered the most popular couple from comics. If put in simple words, this duo can be termed as Superman and Lois Lane of Marvel (love life). Spider-Man and Mary Jane is Marvel’s answer to DC’s romantic story of Superman and Lois Lane. Peter Parker (Spiderman’s alter ego) is a shy geeky guy who always adored and liked Mary Jane. The superhero always had a crush on her and Jane also somewhat liked Peter but wasn’t sure about her feelings. The duo had faced multiple obstacles but eventually got engaged. Jane and Parker have had their struggles even after marriage but have always managed to end things on a happy note.
Flash and Iris West
Next on the list is the duo of Barry Allen and Iris West. This is perhaps one of the oldest romances of comics. The duo first appeared in the 50’s and have carried on from there onwards. And remember it’s Barry Allen not Flash. As the super fast superhero ‘Flash’ didn’t mention about his superhero side to his love interest Iris. West was not unaware about Barry’s real identity for a long period. Even at the time of their marriage Iris had no idea about Barry’s alter ego. Currently the couple is going through a rough patch but it’s sure shot that the couple will overcome all issues.
Cyclops and Jean Grey
Mutants to fall in love, the relationship between X-Men’s X leader and Jean has been an exciting romantic story with lots of ups and downs. The duo has had an endless number of issues and problems. They have parted ways, been separated from each other countless times but have always found ways to reunite. Which is somewhat a sign of true love that the duo of Cyclops and Jean Grey depict.
Batman and Catwoman
Batman has had his fair share of romance. The Billionaire has been romantically involved with multiple ladies over the period of time. However, the Bat’s romantic storyline with Catwoman stands out. Catwoman is known for her tease and has even made the super serious superhero get his guards down. The best part of the duo is their similarity and nature which allows Batman to ease out, when with Catwoman.
Reed Richards and Sue Storm
Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s pair may not be the talk of town in today’s time. But this couple is the first and one of the most iconic pairs of Marvel comics. The fantastic couple has been around for long. The couple has also witnessed one the most talked about and famous weddings in comics history. Richards and Sue have seen it all in their long relationship. However, the duo has been able to face all the difficulties and have remained together.
Aquaman and Mera
This is a story where an assassin (Mera) falls for its prey (Aquaman). Aquaman and Mera are not the happiest couple on the list but definitely deserve a spot on the list. Despite all their problems and difficulties the duo have managed to stay together. The love story of the lords of water hasn’t been explored well on screen but fans have witnessed the layered love story in the comics.
Harley and Ivy
Harley has had some iconic and memorable relationships. It also includes her famous relationship with Joker. Anyways here we are discussing her romantic tale with Ivy. The story started with the duo commiting crimes together. With time they became friends and Ivy showed concerts for Harley (when Harley was miss treated by Joker). Eventually the duo came close and shared a romantic relationship.
Black Canary and Green Arrow
Black Canary and Green Arrow is another couple that has witnessed decades of romantic storyline in comics. The duo has had a hot and cold relationship. Their love story started from fights (some consider it the first stage or sign of love). At least in their case it was definitely true. After their initial fights, Black Canary and Green Arrow got attracted to each other. But things were not so smooth in their transaction from attraction to relationship. The duo faced a lot of issues and even had multiple splits before getting married.
Black Bolt and Medusa
Now let’s welcome the Inhuman royalties to honour our list. Black Bolt and Medusa have a weird relationship. The Inhuman King barely speaks because of his super destructive powers associated with his voice. This relationship has no to little verbal communication. However, relationships need more understanding than talking. And this relationship is a perfect example for it. The Inhuman duo have coined their own ways of communication. Black Bolt and Medusa maintain a healthy relationship and have been able to serve well as the King and Queen for their race.
