Jean Little (2 January 1932 – 6 April 2020)
Jean Little was a Canadian writer whose works are majorly on children’s literature, but besides that, she also wrote two autobiographies – Stars Come Out Within and Little By Little. Many of her works are focused on children with disability or who are affected by someone who is disabled. She was partially blind since birth as a consequence of a wound on her cornea and was often accompanied by a guide dog.
Ralph Ellison (1 March 1913 – 16 April 1994)
Ralph Ellison was an American writer and literary critic who is popularly known for his novel Invisible Man. He was named after the popular writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ellison won the National Book Award and the National Medal of Arts and died in 1994 due to pancreatic cancer.
Bram Stoker (November 8, 1847 – April 20, 1912)
Stoker was an Irish author who is famous for his gothic horror novel Dracula. During his lifetime he was known for being the personal assistant of his actor Sir Henry Irving. Before writing his novel he was a theatre critic for an Irish newspaper. While travelling, Stoker went to Whitby, an English coastal town which partly inspired his Dracula. He died in 1912 of “Locomotor ataxia 6 months”.
Mark Twain (30 November 1835 – 21 April 1910)
Mark Twain was an American entrepreneur, writer, humorist, publisher and lecturer. He was praised as the greatest humorist in the United States. William Faulkner referred to him as the father of American literature. His popular novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which is the sequel.
William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616)
Shakespeare was a versatile person – he was a playwright, actor, and poet. He is hugely considered the greatest writer of the English language and the greatest dramatist of the world. Some of his best works are Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, and Romeo and Juliet.
William Wordsworth (April 7, 1770 – 23 April 1850)
William Wordsworth was one of the most popular English Romantic poets who along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge published Lyrical Ballads which started a new and significant era in English Literature – The Romantic Age. He was a Poet Laureate from 1843 till his death in 1850 due to pleurisy.
Rupert Brooke (August 3, 1887 – April 23, 1915)
Brooke was an English poet who is popular for the idealistic war sonnets that he composed during World War I. One of his popular poems is The Soldier. He was also known for his boyish charms. He died just at the age of 27 due to sepsis.
P.L. Travers (9 August 1899 – 23 April 1996)
Pamela Lyndon Travers was an Australian-British writer who is best known for the Mary Poppins series. Travers’ writing was first published when she was young and she also worked succinctly as a professionally Shakespearean actress. P.L. Travers Esther is the pen name that she adopted while writing the series and when she immigrated to England at the age of 25. Her birth name was Helen Lyndon Goff.
