The highly anticipated TV prequel to the recent Dune movies, titled Dune: Prophecy, is set to premiere this spring, offering a fresh perspective on the Dune universe. The series takes viewers back 10,000 years before the events of the current Dune films, focusing on the origins of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood.

Plot and Inspiration

Based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, Dune: Prophecy delves into the early days of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful order of women whose legacy plays a pivotal role in the Dune saga. The story centers around the Harkonnen siblings, portrayed by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, as they navigate the tumultuous forces threatening humanity and lay the groundwork for the legendary sisterhood.

Creative Team and Cast

The series was initially developed in 2019 and has since evolved through various iterations. Denis Villeneuve, the director behind the successful Dune films, was originally set to direct the pilot but later stepped down. The directorial duties have been taken over by Anna Foerster, known for her work on Outlander and Underworld: Blood Wars. Alison Schapker serves as the showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing and executive producing.

Production and Legacy

The series is co-produced by Max and Legendary Television, with Legendary also producing the acclaimed Dune film franchise. The first two films in the series have garnered critical acclaim and impressive box office returns, with the first film winning six Academy Awards. Following the success of the second film, a third installment is already in development, with Villeneuve hinting at a potential adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Thriller Nuclear War: A Scenario before he returns to the Dune universe.
