Sanderson’s Laws of Magic are a set of rules that Brandon Sanderson created for the magic systems in his novels. The idea of hard magic and soft magic was popularized by Sanderson for world building and creating magic systems in fictional settings.

Sanderson’s Laws of Magic are as follows:

  • An author’s ability to solve conflict with magic is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to how well the reader understands said magic.
  • Limitations > Powers
  • A character’s use of magic must have clear costs, or it is not “real” magic.
  • Magic can never be the whole solution to a problem, or it is not “real” magic.
  • Magic must have a logical structure and consistent rules.
  • Magic should take effort, both physical and mental.
  • Magic should have consequences.
  • The more powerful the magic, the rarer it should be.

These laws are designed to help create magic systems that are logical, consistent, and engaging for the reader. Sanderson has mentioned that he uses these laws as a guide when creating magic systems for his books.
