Borderlands fans have something big to look forward to in 2026. At the closing stretch of Tokyo Game Show 2025, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software surprised audiences with the reveal of Borderlands 4’s very first DLC story expansion, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. Alongside this announcement came the introduction of a brand-new playable Vault Hunter—C4SH.
Who is C4SH?
C4SH is no ordinary Vault Hunter. Once a robotic casino dealer, he spent years shuffling cards and watching gamblers either strike it rich or lose everything at the tables. But witnessing the highs and lows of chance eventually pushed C4SH to abandon his casino life in pursuit of his own fortune as a Vault Hunter.
Pitchford described C4SH’s combat style as heavily influenced by luck and probability. His abilities are centered around dice rolls and playing cards, unleashing random effects in battle. This design makes C4SH a high-risk, high-reward character—capable of becoming the most powerful ally in the game, or a dangerous liability, depending on the roll of the dice. While Gearbox has yet to reveal gameplay footage of his abilities, the teaser hints at unpredictable mechanics that could excite fans who enjoy chaotic playstyles.
Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
The upcoming story expansion not only debuts C4SH but also brings new adventures with Ellie at the center of a cosmic-horror themed story arc. Players will embark on missions in a completely new region while also uncovering side quests, collecting fresh Legendary Gear, and unlocking cosmetics.
The DLC includes:
- A new playable character: C4SH
- Story missions featuring Ellie’s cosmic-horror adventure
- A new explorable map region
- Legendary Gear drops and side missions
- Extensive cosmetic rewards, including:
- 4 Vault Hunter Heads
- 6 Styles
- 4 Weapon Skins
- 2 Vehicle Skins
- 3 ECHO-4 Drone Skins
- 6 Attachments
- 1 ECHO-4 Frame
“Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned” is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026. C4SH will be the first of two new Vault Hunters joining Borderlands 4 through DLC content.

Borderlands 4’s Current Landscape
Since its release earlier this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC—with a Nintendo Switch 2 version arriving October 3—Borderlands 4 has been praised by critics as a strong return for the series, despite some early technical hurdles. Performance issues and missing features at launch led to review bombs from players, but consistent patches have already improved stability and added quality-of-life updates, such as the much-requested FOV slider on consoles.
Despite the mixed reception from players, critics have largely lauded the game as a return to the chaotic fun that defines the franchise. For fans who found the base game’s Vault Hunter roster lacking in personality, the stylish grit of C4SH may be the fresh twist they’ve been waiting for.
Looking Ahead
As fans await more details and gameplay footage of C4SH’s abilities, anticipation is building for Gearbox’s 2026 roadmap. With performance improvements rolling out and new content on the horizon, Borderlands 4 looks set for an exciting year ahead. For players who have been on the fence, the addition of a luck-driven robotic gunslinger like C4SH could finally be the reason to jump back into the Borderlands universe.
