Gearbox Entertainment officially unveiled the much-anticipated Borderlands 4 at gamescom 2024, during the event’s Opening Night Live. The reveal came with a mysterious teaser trailer, leaving fans eagerly awaiting more details about the upcoming installment in the iconic looter shooter franchise.
Teaser Trailer and Release Window Confirmed
The teaser trailer, which was shown during the live event, has confirmed that Borderlands 4 is set to release in 2025. The game will be available on multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Publisher 2K Games has further clarified that the game will launch during parent company Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year 2026, meaning that the release could occur anytime between April 2025 and the end of 2025.
In the trailer, fans got their first glimpse of an all-new planet, setting the stage for what promises to be another action-packed adventure. The official blurb from 2K describes Borderlands 4 as the fourth mainline title and the seventh overall entry in the franchise. Players will once again step into the shoes of a legendary Vault Hunter, tasked with uncovering secret alien treasures while battling a slew of enemies.
Gearbox’s Vision for Borderlands 4
Randy Pitchford, founder and President of Gearbox Entertainment, expressed his excitement about the announcement, stating, “The team and I at Gearbox have a lot we’ve wanted to do with Borderlands since we first introduced the looter shooter genre to the world with our original game. All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are putting everything we have into making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever before while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.”
This statement highlights Gearbox’s dedication to evolving the Borderlands experience, while staying true to the elements that have made the series a beloved staple in the gaming community. With its trademark humor, unforgettable characters, and a vast array of weapons, Borderlands 4 is poised to build on the franchise’s rich legacy.
Borderlands Franchise Success and Future Prospects
The Borderlands series has been a monumental success, with over 87 million copies sold worldwide. The games have garnered critical acclaim for their unique blend of humor, story depth, and innovative gameplay mechanics. Borderlands 3, the last mainline entry, was released in September 2019, and the franchise has since expanded into other media, including a feature film. However, the movie adaptation was met with lukewarm reception and underwhelming box office performance.
Despite this setback, Borderlands remains one of 2K’s most successful franchises. Catharina Lavers Mallet, Senior Vice President and General Manager of 2K Core Games, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming release, stating, “We’re thrilled to be able to share with our fans that 2025 will mark a massive year for 2K and Gearbox Entertainment. The Borderlands series is one of 2K’s most successful franchises ever and is beloved by millions globally. We’re excited that our already close partnership and collaboration with the Gearbox team has grown even deeper, and we look forward to delivering best-in-class experiences for both longtime fans and new players alike.”
