As a lover of horror in both movies and literature, I find it difficult to be frightened. However, there is one book that stands out above the rest – House of Leaves. The story grows progressively darker with each page turn and slowly transforms into a meta experience of chasing after breadcrumbs through footnotes, twisting text (requiring the reader to physically rotate the book at times), and even pages filled with emptiness. The characters’ madness begins to infect the reader, as they navigate through the book’s time and space, leaving a lasting impression that will stay with them for a long time. The experience is incredibly visceral (especially since it relies on the reader’s imagination), making it all the more terrifying. Even now, my hands tremble as I speak of it.

I can confidently say that House of Leaves is one of the scariest books I’ve ever read. It completely consumed me, leaving me unable to put it down. It even kept me up at night, barely allowing me to sleep. I became so engrossed in the story that I carried the book with me everywhere. Be warned, it is a book that will mess with your mind.

Second book in our list is Neil Gaiman’s first novel for all ages, Coraline. Which tells the story of a young girl who discovers a locked door in her family’s new flat. The Book is one of the must reads of horror genre, One reader recounted how a book left her so spooked that she couldn’t even finish it and resorted to hiding it away in her closet. Another recalled the unsettling feeling of reading Coraline, particularly the scene where the mother figure wants to sew buttons onto the young girl’s eyes. Even a horror movie fan was taken aback by the haunting tale. The book had such an impact that the reader was still affected by it years later. Despite having read other horror classics like The Shining and studied gothic horror literature in college, nothing could compare to the lasting impression Coraline had on her psyche.

You by Caroline Kepnes

One book that I always recommend to people and that is seriously eerie is a tale of a man who becomes fixated on a woman he encounters and begins to stalk her. What makes this book so unsettling is that it is written from the stalker’s perspective, and as a reader, you cannot help but be drawn into his obsessive world. There were moments where I had to pause and reflect on the author’s ability to make me empathize with such a disturbed character. It is a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat and not one you want to read before bedtime. The fact that it is entirely plausible makes it all the more terrifying.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

If you’re looking for a horror book that will give you a serious case of the heebie-jeebies, look no further. This book is a favorite of many for good reason – it’s absolutely unsettling. As you read, you’ll start to feel a sense of helplessness as you try to figure out who the killer is, only to have your suspects whittled down until there’s no one left. The writing is superb and none of the adaptations I’ve seen have truly done it justice. One of the most unnerving aspects of the book is the desperation and isolation felt by the remaining characters as they’re picked off one by one. Vera’s descent into madness only adds to the overall sense of unease, and the scene with the seaweed is particularly suspenseful. Ultimately, it’s the mounting atmosphere of dread and isolation that Christie so skillfully creates that will leave you feeling absolutely chilled.

Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt

If you’re looking for a book that will send shivers down your spine and leave you sleepless at night, look no further than this one. The story is centered around a town that is plagued by a witch who has the terrifying ability to trap anyone who enters her domain. What makes this book particularly eerie is that the witch’s eyes and mouth are sewn shut, making her all the more ominous. But when a group of teenagers decides to challenge her, they uncover a horrifying secret that will change everything. The novel is set in modern times, but the town’s haunted past is never far away. If you’re a fan of horror stories, this one is a must-read. And if that wasn’t enough, the version sold in the US features a different ending from the original published in Belgium and the Netherlands, giving readers even more to sink their teeth into.

Bird Box is a spine-chilling novel that will have you on edge throughout the night. It tells the story of an unknown terror that, upon sight, drives a person to deadly violence. No one knows what this terror is or where it came from, and only a few scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, Malorie has long dreamed of fleeing to a place where they could be safe. Now that her children are four years old, she decides it’s time to make the perilous journey downriver in a rowboat, blindfolded and with nothing to rely on but her wits and her children’s trained ears. One wrong move could be fatal, especially with the unknown terror following them all the while. The story interweaves past and present to create a snapshot of a world unravelled that will keep you hooked until the final page.

Bird Box is not for the faint of heart. It is a truly terrifying book that will make you want to cover your windows with blankets. The atmosphere is so gripping that you won’t want to start reading it at night. This novel is a masterclass in creating an unsettling atmosphere, and it is one of the best examples of the genre that you’ll ever read.

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay

This book is an absolute masterclass in creepy storytelling, with a unique twist on the perspective of an 8-year-old narrator that heightens the fear factor. The ending is also a shocker that you won’t see coming! It follows the story of the Barrett family, a seemingly normal suburban clan whose lives are upended when their teenage daughter Marjorie begins exhibiting signs of acute schizophrenia. Despite desperate attempts to get her the help she needs, Marjorie’s condition worsens, leading the family to turn to a local Catholic priest for an exorcism. Meanwhile, a production company sees an opportunity to document the Barretts’ ordeal for a hit reality TV show. But when the situation spirals out of control, tragedy ensues and the events are soon the stuff of urban legend.

Fifteen years later, the younger sister of Marjorie, Merry, is interviewed by a bestselling author about what really happened all those years ago. As she shares her memories of the terrifying events, long-buried secrets and conflicting versions of the truth come to light, making for a chilling and mind-bending tale that raises profound questions about memory, reality, and the nature of evil.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

The book delves into the intricate design of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and the spine-chilling story of H.H. Holmes, a serial killer who ran a sinister ‘hotel’ during the same time. Such true tales send shivers down my spine. This gripping book is a blend of horror, history, and crime, and it had me captivated, terrified, and sleepless! The narrative uncovers the horrifying reality of America’s first recorded serial killer, who operated from a monstrous MURDER CASTLE, and Lawson’s writing is undeniably eerie. However, what kept me awake was the realization of how effortlessly people can be deceived into thinking that everything is okay, while many are vanishing without a trace. The fact that it is a true account only amplifies the terror.

Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

If you’re looking for a spine-chilling read, look no further than Salem’s Lot by Stephen King. This classic vampire story has been terrifying readers for decades, and for good reason. Even diehard Stephen King fans agree that this book is one of his scariest and darkest stories yet. The thought of vampires infiltrating a small town and turning its residents into the undead is enough to give anyone nightmares. And for one reader who read the book while in a sleepaway camp in the woods of Maine, the fear was even more intense. The scratching of undead children at the window is an image that’s hard to shake.

But it’s not just the vampires themselves that make this book so terrifying. The loss of faith experienced by Father Callahan is enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine. It’s a reminder that sometimes the scariest monsters are the ones that lurk within ourselves. Salem’s Lot is a must-read for horror fans. Just be prepared to sleep with the lights on for a while after finishing it.
