The Spider-Verse saga continues its legacy with the announcement that Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will co-direct the highly anticipated third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The duo, both deeply entrenched in the franchise’s creative journey, bring their extensive experience and passion for storytelling to conclude Miles Morales’ epic tale.

A Legacy of Vision and Creativity

Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are no strangers to the Spider-Verse universe. Persichetti was one of the co-directors of the 2018 Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and later served as an executive producer on its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. In a joint statement, the directors expressed their enthusiasm for the project:

“We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting. The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it – we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”

A Record-Breaking Franchise

The Spider-Verse films have redefined animated superhero storytelling. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced audiences to the multiverse concept and the idea that “anyone can wear the mask,” earning $384 million globally and an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, built on this foundation, surpassing its predecessor’s entire run in just 12 days and establishing itself as a cultural phenomenon.

Behind the Scenes: A Stellar Team

Franchise masterminds Phil Lord and Chris Miller return to co-write the screenplay and serve as producers alongside Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg are executive producers, with Jessica Berri joining as co-producer. Lord and Miller lauded Persichetti and Thompson’s contributions:

“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure. There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin.”

No Release Date Yet

Initially scheduled for a March 29, 2024 release, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, and no new date has been announced. Despite the delay, anticipation remains sky-high, with Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson expressing confidence in the directorial team:

“Bob, Justin, and the entire filmmaking team have been hard at work crafting something truly spectacular, and we’ve been blown away by what we’ve seen so far. There’s more work ahead to bring Miles’ story to a satisfying close, and we are confident that they are the perfect pair to pull it off.”
