This marks a significant departure from previous Blue Beetles. Dan Garrett drew power from an ancient Egyptian scarab, while Ted Kord had to rely on his own technological genius. Jaime’s scarab, on the other hand, is a product of an intergalactic conqueror race called the Reach. These scarabs were sent across the universe to find a host that could be manipulated into becoming a sleeper agent for the Reach. Eventually, Jaime’s scarab, which initially caused him unbearable pain, starts communicating with him in English rather than its alien tongue. The scarab even gives itself a name – Kaji Dha – a nod to the quote Dan Garrett would use to transform into the Blue Beetle.
