Amazon MGM Studios is officially reviving one of science fiction’s most enduring universes. The studio has greenlit a new Stargate series for Prime Video, marking the franchise’s first television return since Universe concluded in 2011.
The new chapter, simply titled Stargate, will be spearheaded by franchise veteran Martin Gero, who will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Gero began his television career two decades ago as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis and later worked across all three previous live-action series — Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe. Reflecting on his return, Gero shared, “Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
Joining Gero on the project are Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), along with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the creators of the 1994 Stargate feature film that started it all. The film’s success gave rise to a sprawling multimedia franchise spanning decades and formats — from long-running TV series like Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007), Atlantis (2004–2009), and Universe (2009–2011), to the animated Stargate Infinity (2002–2003), and the digital-only Stargate Origins (2018).
Longtime creative leads Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who were pivotal to the earlier shows, will return as consulting producers, ensuring the spirit of the franchise’s rich mythology remains intact.

Plot specifics for the new Series remain under wraps, though Amazon describes the project as a “bold new chapter” in the saga. The series promises to embrace the core concept that has always defined Stargate: an ancient ring-shaped device capable of creating stable wormholes for instantaneous interstellar travel — a gateway that not only connects distant worlds but also explores humanity’s place among the stars.
Nick Pepper, Head of U.S. SVOD TV Development at Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the significance of the revival, stating, “Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience — one that honors the series’ legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
This new series also reflects Amazon’s continued push to leverage MGM’s extensive intellectual property following its $8.5 billion acquisition of the studio in 2022. Other MGM-based series in development include Elle, a Legally Blonde prequel starring Reese Witherspoon; Tomb Raider with Sophie Turner; and Barbershop, starring Jermaine Fowler.
