Singer and hip-hop artist Akon was arrested last week in suburban Atlanta after failing to appear in court over a previous citation related to driving with a suspended license. Police confirmed that the Grammy-nominated musician, whose legal name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, was taken into custody by Chamblee officers on Friday following an alert from a traffic camera system.

According to the Chamblee Police Department, an officer responded to a business called Tint World, located on Chamblee Dunwoody Road, around 11 a.m. after automated Flock safety cameras detected a vehicle linked to an outstanding bench warrant. Upon arriving, police found Akon standing outside the vehicle and confirmed he was the registered owner. Officers informed him of the warrant, and Akon cooperated during the arrest. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail before being transferred to Roswell authorities and later released the same day after posting bail.

The bench warrant stemmed from an earlier traffic stop on September 10 in Roswell, where officers discovered Akon in a disabled white Tesla Cybertruck on Holcomb Bridge Road. While assisting with the stalled vehicle, the responding officer ran the plates and learned that Akon’s driver’s license had been suspended for failing to appear in court in January 2023. Police also reported that the vehicle lacked valid insurance and contained an “illegal vape.” The truck was impounded, and Akon was cited for driving without a valid license at that time.

Following his most recent arrest, it remains unclear when Akon is scheduled to appear in court or whether further charges will be filed. Authorities have not disclosed the current status of the impounded Cybertruck.

Akon, who was born in the United States to Senegalese parents and spent part of his childhood in Senegal, rose to global fame in the mid-2000s after releasing his debut album. Known for chart-topping hits like “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You,” and “Locked Up,” he has also been active in philanthropic projects across Africa.

Despite last week’s arrest, Akon appears to be continuing his professional commitments. He is currently on tour in India, where he performed in Delhi just two days after being taken into custody. His representatives have not commented publicly regarding the incident or his legal situation.
