In the ever-evolving world of comic book collectibles, a new zenith has been reached with the sale of a pristine copy of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman, at Heritage Auctions’ Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction. This iconic issue, encapsulating the dawn of the superhero genre, has soared to an unprecedented $6 million at auction, breaking the previous record of $5.3 million from a private sale of Superman #1 just two years prior. This sale not only underscores the undying allure of Superman but also marks a historic moment in the realm of comic book auctions.
This particular copy of Action Comics #1, rated an impressive 8.5 by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), hails from a revered Kansas City collection. It stands as one of the highest-graded copies known to exist, with only two others receiving a higher grade. Yet, it’s noteworthy that there are even finer copies out there, hidden away in collections that haven’t seen the light of day for decades, long before the market for these rarities skyrocketed.
The escalating value of Action Comics #1 is evident not only in its record-shattering sales figure but also in the remarkable appreciation of its worth over a relatively short period. A copy of the same grade sold for $3.25 million just three years ago, demonstrating the exponential growth in demand and valuation for the most sought-after superhero memorabilia. This trend is further highlighted by the sale of a 0.5 condition copy of the same issue for $408,000, indicating a robust market for even the most worn copies, given their historical and cultural significance.

CGC estimates the existence of approximately 100 copies of Action Comics #1 worldwide, making any issue a rare commodity, especially those in “Very Fine” condition or better. This scarcity, coupled with the character’s enduring popularity, drives the fervent bidding wars and sky-high prices seen at auction.
The auction also featured other notable sales, including a letter from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel discussing the potential takeover of the character from Joe Shuster, which fetched $264,000. A restored copy of Action Comics #1 reached $576,000, setting a record for restored copies. Moreover, high-grade issues of other landmark titles, such as Avengers #1 and Sensation Comics #1 (featuring Wonder Woman’s second appearance), commanded impressive sums, selling for $432,000 and $420,000, respectively.
Heritage Auctions Vice President Barry Sandoval expressed excitement over the auction’s success, highlighting the rich history encompassed within the lots and the fierce competition they ignited. This event not only made history with the highest auction price ever achieved for a comic book but also celebrated the legacy of superhero comics, from the Golden Age to modern times, including treasures like a pre-Golden Age Superman artifact and memorabilia from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This landmark sale of Action Comics #1 at $6 million is a testament to the profound impact of superhero comics on popular culture and the investment potential they hold. It marks a pivotal moment in the comic book world, underscoring the timeless appeal of Superman and the ever-growing interest in rare and historic comic book treasures.
