HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was quietly shaping up to be one of the most promising expansions of the Game of Thrones universe. But just as anticipation for its second season continued to build, an unexpected real-world disaster has brought production to a standstill.

Filming for Season 2 was abruptly halted on April 14, 2026, after Storm Therese unleashed severe flooding across parts of Gran Canaria, Spain. The storm, described as the region’s heaviest rainfall in 15 years, caused extensive damage at Las Niñas Dam — one of the show’s primary filming locations — leaving large sections of the set completely submerged.

A Production Derailed by Nature

The production had only recently shifted to Spain after filming in Belfast, Ireland. The move was creatively motivated, with Gran Canaria’s dry, rugged terrain chosen to support a storyline centered around drought conditions. Ironically, it was this very location that became the epicenter of the disruption.

Reports indicate that the submerged set cannot be accessed safely, forcing HBO and its production team to pause operations indefinitely. Before any recovery work can begin, the crew is required to submit a detailed action plan outlining how they will remove the damaged set and equipment. This process will only move forward once water levels recede enough to allow safe access.

Local officials have also confirmed that the production had secured the filming area from late February through mid-May. Now, those carefully laid plans have been upended, with no immediate clarity on whether filming will resume at the same location or shift elsewhere.

Environmental Concerns and Recovery Efforts

Beyond the logistical challenges, the situation has also triggered environmental responsibilities. Authorities have mandated that the production company carry out cleanup and restoration efforts once conditions stabilize. Early mitigation steps are already underway, including the planting of 50 Canary Island pines — a measure aimed at offsetting the ecological impact of the large-scale shoot.

These requirements add another layer of complexity to an already difficult situation, as the production must balance recovery efforts with rescheduling its remaining shoot.

A Setback for a Promising Series

The disruption comes at a particularly frustrating moment for HBO. Unlike House of the Dragon, which leaned heavily on spectacle and political conflict, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms carved out its identity through a more intimate, character-driven narrative. Centered on Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg, the series offered a warmer, more grounded journey through Westeros — one that resonated strongly with audiences.

That approach paid off. Season 1 drew over 24 million viewers per episode and earned a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, establishing it as a critical and commercial success. HBO’s confidence was evident early on, with the network renewing the series for a second season even before the first had fully aired.

What This Means for Season 2

Despite reports suggesting that most of the filming was nearing completion — with a target wrap date of June 2026 — the flooding has introduced significant uncertainty. There’s no official word yet on whether the planned 2027 release window will be affected, but production delays of this scale often have ripple effects that extend far beyond the immediate.

For now, HBO has remained silent on revised timelines or contingency plans. What is clear, however, is that even in a world filled with dragons and knights, some of the biggest challenges still come from forces beyond anyone’s control.

As the waters slowly recede in Gran Canaria, the future of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 hangs in the balance — a reminder that behind every fantasy epic lies a production vulnerable to very real-world events.
