Nintendo has officially lifted the curtain on a brand-new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it’s packed with long-awaited reveals, nostalgic callbacks, and a few wild surprises. Released during a special Nintendo Direct hosted by Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, the short presentation gave fans their first real look at several classic characters finally stepping into the spotlight.

Most notably, the trailer confirms the arrival of Yoshi and Birdo, two fan-favorite characters whose appearances had been rumored for months. The movie is now in post-production and will hit theaters on April 1, two days earlier than originally planned.

Yoshi Finally Makes His Big-Screen Debut

The biggest moment of the trailer is easily Yoshi’s introduction. His appearance had already been teased after the first Mario movie’s post-credits scene showed a green egg starting to crack. Later, a Pillsbury cookie box leak added fuel to the speculation. Now, it’s official.

In the trailer, Mario and Luigi are seen riding motorbikes through a desert before reaching an inverted pyramid in the Sand Kingdom — a location familiar to players of Super Mario Odyssey. The brothers are tasked with clearing out a blocked Warp Pipe. Expecting danger, they power up with Fire Flowers and head underground.

Instead of a monster, they find Yoshi inside.

Rather than acting tough or aggressive, Yoshi is shown as shy and nervous at first. He even mumbles a few words and softly calls out his own name, giving fans their first hint of what he will sound like in the movie. As the trailer continues, it becomes clear that Yoshi quickly warms up to Mario and Luigi and becomes part of their growing team.

Interestingly, Nintendo has not revealed who is voicing Yoshi.

Birdo, Mouser, and Other Deep-Cut Characters

Another major surprise is Birdo, who appears in a fast-paced sequence where she angrily fires eggs at Princess Peach. Peach blocks the attack with her parasol, and for a brief moment, viewers also catch a glimpse of Mouser — a lesser-known villain from Super Mario Bros. 2.

The pairing of Birdo and Mouser is a clever nod to that classic game, which took place in the dream world of Subcon. This has led fans to wonder if Peach might have her own side mission in the film, separate from Mario and Luigi’s desert adventure.

The trailer also introduces Lakitu, who attacks the group from the sky, tossing projectiles at Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi.

Chaos, Nostalgia, and One Very Strange Finale

As the trailer continues, it shifts into a rapid montage of action-heavy scenes. Mario and Peach are shown sneaking through a lava-filled area that resembles Bowser’s castle. A Toad is swallowed by a massive Cheep Cheep, only to be rescued by Luigi wearing the Frog Suit.

Then things get even stranger.

In the final moments, Yoshi is seen holding a weapon that looks like the classic SNES Super Scope, while Toad cradles Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. The group then faces off against a towering T-Rex that looks straight out of Super Mario Odyssey.

What it all means is still a mystery — but it certainly sets a bold, unpredictable tone for the movie.

The Movie Is Nearly Finished

During the Nintendo Direct, Illumination boss Chris Meledandri confirmed that the film’s animation is complete and that the project is now in post-production. The music and sound design are still being finalized, and themes from the Super Mario Galaxy games are being re-recorded with a 70-piece orchestra.

Nintendo also shared a brief recap of Yoshi’s long history in the franchise, celebrating his evolution across decades of games.

Returning Cast and Missing Faces

The core cast from the first movie is back, including:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek

It was previously revealed that Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr., and Brie Larson plays Rosalina. However, neither character appears in this trailer, despite being featured heavily in an earlier reveal.

Nintendo has also hinted that the movie includes several “deep cut” characters from the franchise’s past, and fans continue to speculate that the story may finally address long-standing theories about Peach and Rosalina.

A New Adventure Begins April 1

With Yoshi, Birdo, Lakitu, and more joining the lineup, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is shaping up to be a massive celebration of Nintendo’s legacy. Packed with action, humor, and unexpected throwbacks, the film promises to take Mario’s world to bigger, stranger, and more emotional places than ever before.

The countdown is officially on — Mario and his crew return to theaters on April 1.
