Fans of the brutal, mythic world of God of War have their first big live-action reveal: Ryan Hurst is set to bring the iconic Spartan warrior Kratos to life in Amazon’s Prime Video adaptation. Hurst, a rugged veteran of TV heavy-hitters like Sons of Anarchy—where he played the loyal Opie Winston—and The Walking Dead as the hulking Beta, seems like a natural fit for the role. It’s a homecoming of sorts too, since he already lent his gravelly voice to Thor in God of War Ragnarök, snagging a BAFTA nomination for that thunderous performance.

The series, straight from the Norse mythology vibes of the latest PlayStation games, dives into Kratos and his diary-of-a-young-girl-by-anne-frank/”>young son Atreus on a poignant quest to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mom. Picture this: the once-unstoppable God of War, born a Spartan and forged in a cutthroat martial world, grapples with fatherhood. He made a devil’s bargain with Ares way back, trading his soul for battlefield glory, and spent the franchise’s 10 games slaughtering gods, monsters, and mortals alike. Now, in this new chapter inspired by the last two titles, Kratos teaches Atreus how to wield godlike power wisely, while the kid schools his old man on a touch of humanity. That father-son tension? It’s the pulsing heart of the whole story.

Amazon and Sony Pictures Television first greenlit the project back in 2022 through PlayStation Productions, and it’s locked in for two seasons right out of the gate. Pre-production is humming along in Vancouver, with casting ramping up. Ronald D. Moore, the mastermind behind Outlander and For All Mankind, is writing and showrunning, backed by a stacked executive producer team including Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Co-EPs like Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis round it out, and Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) is directing the first two episodes.

Hurst’s got an impressive resume stacking up for this: recent leads in Netflix’s The Abandons (reuniting him with Sons creator Kurt Sutter), plus stints in SWAT, Bosch, Bates Motel, and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Next up, he’ll hit screens in Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey on July 17. While some fans might’ve dreamed of Christopher Judge, the voice acting legend from the games, slipping into the live-action suit, Hurst’s prior God of War cred makes him a solid pick.

This joins a hot wave of video game adaptations—think The Last of Us eyeing a third season, Fallout’s second run on Amazon, a Horizon Zero Dawn series brewing at Netflix, and Tomb Raider’s cast locking in for Prime Video. God of War feels primed to carve out its own bloody legend.
