Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up once again — this time for the intense crime thriller The Rip, premiering globally on Netflix on January 16. The longtime collaborators swap their Boston roots for the heat of Miami, playing police officers whose loyalty and morality come under fire after a life-altering discovery.

Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip is based on true events and follows a team of Miami cops who uncover millions of dollars hidden inside a derelict stash house. What begins as a routine bust quickly spirals into chaos when greed, suspicion, and outside threats start to tear the group apart. As the word of the massive cash seizure spreads, the team faces mounting pressure from criminal forces—and from within their own ranks.

The trailer sets the tone for a tense, morally complex story. “From the outside looking in, it seems simple. Seize the cash, count it, and turn it in,” Damon’s character says. “On the inside, it’s different.” The “rip” — a staggering $20 million — tests the officers’ integrity as they wrestle with the temptation to keep the money and the fear of betrayal. At one point, Affleck’s character challenges Damon, shouting, “You wanna steal this rip? Just say it out loud!” The tension escalates as paranoia poisons their brotherhood, culminating in a chilling moment when Damon’s character aims a gun and demands, “You a snitch?”

Affleck and Damon lead a powerhouse ensemble cast that includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler. The film blends psychological tension with gritty action, examining how greed can corrupt even the bonds of trust forged through years of partnership.

The Rip also marks another collaboration between the two Oscar-winning friends and producers, who continue their work under their joint venture, Artists Equity — the company behind recent projects like Air. Since first appearing together in 1992’s School Ties, Affleck and Damon have built a celebrated on-screen partnership spanning Good Will HuntingDogmaThe Last Duel, and Air.

This time, however, their friendship faces its most dangerous test yet — in a city where loyalty can be bought, and every decision comes with a price.
