Imagine a world where your notifications don’t just demand your attention—they hunt you. That is the terrifying premise of “Look Into My Eyes” , the new techno-horror series from Mad Cave Studios. Created by the visionary writer/artist Rubine, this debut issue is a glitchy, neon-soaked nightmare that blends the high school cruelty of 13 Reasons Why with the surveillance paranoia of Black Mirror. We’ve read through the first issue, analyzed the clues, and even scanned the QR codes. Here is the full breakdown of the story, the characters, and the secrets hiding in Cravenwood.

The Opening: The Sound of Shame

The story doesn’t ease us in; it throws us into a panic attack. The opening pages are a visceral montage of harassment. We don’t see the victim’s face clearly at first, but we hear the noise: banging on doors, hysterical crying, and the physical sickness of anxiety (vomiting).

The phrase “SHAME ON YOU” repeats like a mantra, overlapping with the relentless “Ping! Ping!” of notifications. This establishes the book’s core theme immediately: in this world, shame is a weapon, and the internet is the firing squad.

The Setting: Morning in Cravenwood

Welcome to Cravenwood, a town that feels suffocatingly small. We are introduced to the social hierarchy through Jesse (aka @SassyJesse), the host of a “Morning Cravenwood” gossip podcast.

Through Jesse’s broadcast, we learn the rules of this world:

  • The Tech: A new app called “Knock Knock” (owned by the ominous CannonCorp) is in its testing phase here. It has taken over the school.
  • The Royalty: Nancy is the Queen Bee, and Michael is her “perfect” boyfriend of 17 weeks.
  • The Tragedy: Jesse sheds some performative crocodile tears for Suzy, a girl who has “disappeared.” It’s clear the town has moved on, treating her absence as just another piece of gossip.

The Protagonist: The Resistance

Enter our hero, RJ Nguyen. RJ isn’t a detective; she’s a punk-rock activist. While the rest of the town is addicted to Knock Knock, RJ is protesting CannonCorp.

She stands alone outside the school, protesting the new antennas that are “mining data” from the students. She warns her family that “when the product is free, the product is you.” RJ is grounded, cynical, and isolated. Her only lifeline is her friend Ellie, who is currently stuck at Argento Summer Camp (a nice nod to horror legend Dario Argento), leaving RJ to face the nightmare in Cravenwood alone.

The Conflict: “The Twisted Eye”

RJ doesn’t just protest; she publishes. She hands out a printed fanzine called “The Twisted Eye,” accusing the popular clique of driving Suzy away.

This leads to the issue’s inciting incident: The Brawl. RJ confronts Nancy in the hallway. Nancy mocks RJ’s theories, and words turn into fists. A massive fight breaks out involving RJ, Nancy, and the boys (including Michael). The result? The Principal intervenes. The entire group is sentenced to Summer School. This is a crucial plot point—it traps our main cast together in one location for the upcoming horror.

The Investigation: diving into the Deep End

Grounded and stuck in summer school, RJ decides to change tactics. She can’t fight the system from the outside, so she goes undercover.

RJ joins Knock Knock. She sets up a profile to investigate Suzy’s disappearance from the inside. Through flashbacks in the app’s comment sections, we learn the brutal truth: Suzy wasn’t just bullied; she was destroyed. Explicit photos were leaked at a party, and the “likes” and “shares” from her own friends drove her to the brink.

The Twist: An Unlikely Ally

An anonymous user messages RJ with a promise of truth. RJ meets them in secret, expecting a monster, but finding… Jesse.

The gossip king is breaking down. Jesse admits his guilt; he stood by and laughed while Suzy was destroyed. He provides RJ with the “smoking gun”: chat logs showing that Nancy orchestrated the attack because she thought Suzy was after Michael. But there’s a catch—Nancy received the photos from a mysterious, unknown user named @DKIBNER78. The evil didn’t start with Nancy; she was just the executioner.

The Climax: The Ghost in the Machine

As RJ and Jesse speak, a notification blasts out to every phone in Cravenwood simultaneously.

Sender: Suzy. Message: “THIS IS YOUR FAULT… SHAME ON YOU.”

Panic erupts. The app admins delete the message for “violating community standards,” but it’s too late. The digital ghost has spoken. RJ realizes Suzy is either alive and hiding, or something supernatural has taken over her account. The issue ends with RJ vowing to uncover the truth, no matter how dark it gets.
