After exploring supernatural themes with Sinners, Ryan Coogler is returning to the world of Wakanda. Speaking during the Sinners panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, the two-time Oscar nominee officially confirmed that Black Panther 3 will be his next directorial project. Coogler explained that he and his team are “working on it hard,” finally putting to rest months of speculation about the future of the Black Panther franchise.
The filmmaker’s return marks the next chapter in completing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther trilogy, which began in 2018 with Chadwick Boseman’s iconic portrayal of King T’Challa. Boseman’s debut as the character came in Captain America: Civil War (2016), followed by Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). After his untimely death in 2020, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) paid tribute to his legacy while passing the mantle to Letitia Wright’s Shuri, who continues to lead the story moving forward.
Adding to the excitement, Denzel Washington revealed in a 2024 interview that Coogler is crafting a role specifically for him in the sequel. “Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther,” Washington said, noting that he would take on additional film projects like Othello and King Lear before considering retirement. Coogler later confirmed the veteran actor’s remarks, signaling Washington’s likely inclusion in the upcoming film.
Although Marvel has not officially announced a release date, early rumors suggest the film’s working title could be Black Panther: Shadows of Wakanda. Fans speculate that this title hints at a deeper exploration of the kingdom’s political and cultural legacy in a post-T’Challa era. With Shuri expected to retain the Black Panther mantle, reports largely dismiss any potential recasting of T’Challa, remaining consistent with the narrative direction introduced in Wakanda Forever.
The third film aims to further enrich the MCU’s ongoing storyline as it expands across multiple franchises.
