The Scream franchise is once again making waves — both for its chilling return and the controversy surrounding it. The first official trailer for Scream 7 dropped on Thursday, confirming the long-awaited return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. The trailer opens with Ghostface’s familiar taunt — “Hello, Sidney. Did you miss me?” — signaling a sinister new chapter for the iconic final girl.
This seventh installment, directed by Scream creator Kevin Williamson, follows Sidney as a mother now drawn back into the terror she once escaped. The killer’s attention turns to her daughter, Tatum (played by Isabel May), who aspires to learn her mother’s survival instincts. In a touching nod to the original 1996 film, Sidney names her daughter after her late friend Tatum, murdered by Ghostface decades earlier.
The trailer also showcases Courteney Cox returning as the seasoned reporter Gale Weathers. After surviving brutal encounters in previous films, Gale declares, “Let’s unmask this fucker,” hinting at another high-stakes showdown. David Arquette, whose character Dewey Riley died in Scream (2022), is rumored to appear, despite his on-screen death. Among the new cast members is Michelle Randolph, seen in a shocking sequence involving Stu Macher’s (Matthew Lillard) infamous house — though as always with Scream, no kill is certain.
Returning veterans include Lillard as original Ghostface Stu, Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis, and Scream 3’s Scott Foley as Roman Bridger. Also reprising their roles are Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as the sibling survivors Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin. The ensemble expands with Joel McHale, Anna Camp, Mckenna Grace, Ethan Embry, Mark Consuelos, Jimmy Tatro, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, and Sam Rechner.
Kevin Williamson’s Vision and Franchise Revival
Williamson, who penned the scripts for the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, steps behind the camera for this chapter. He confirmed that Sidney’s story will finally receive closure, promising fans that the character “deserves a happy ending after all the torment she’s endured.” The screenplay comes from James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella serving as executive producers. Marco Beltrami, who composed the music for the earlier films, returns to score the movie.
Casting Controversy and Backlash
Despite the excitement surrounding Campbell’s return, the trailer’s release reignited controversy tied to the firing of Scream 2022 star Melissa Barrera. In November 2023, Spyglass Media dismissed Barrera over her social media remarks on the Israel-Hamas conflict, citing a “zero tolerance policy for antisemitism or hate speech.” Following her firing, co-star Jenna Ortega voluntarily left the project, stating that production had begun to “fall apart” after Barrera’s removal.
Fans quickly voiced outrage across social media, with many declaring that the franchise “ended” for them after Scream VI. One post read, “This is missing two very important women,” while others urged audiences to boycott the movie and instead support upcoming parody sequel Scary Movie 6. Additionally, the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement launched a campaign against Scream 7, joined by more than twenty arts and advocacy groups.
Supporters of Barrera have also promoted her other projects, including Your Monster (2024), now streaming on HBO Max and Hulu, and The Copenhagen Test, set to premiere on December 27, 2025.
The Future of the Franchise
While Scream 7 brings back familiar faces and introduces a new generation of survivors, the absence of Barrera and Ortega looms large. Former director Christopher Landon, initially attached to helm the sequel, also departed amid backlash surrounding Barrera’s exit. Despite the turbulence, fans old and new remain eager to see how Sidney Prescott confronts Ghostface one last time.
