Marvel’s massive new ensemble, Avengers: Doomsday, has completed its principal photography after a lengthy shoot that began in April 2025. Crew members and production staff immediately marked the milestone on social media, posting photos and videos of the wrap-day swag — T-shirts, posters, caps, jackets and other goodies emblazoned with the film’s logo and artwork featuring Doctor Doom. Those behind-the-scenes posts made clear the items were handed out to the team to commemorate the end of the main shoot.

A big shoot followed by a long polish

Production sources say the film filmed for just over five months, a timetable that lines up with previous Avengers shoots. The project now moves into an extended post-production phase expected to last about 14 months — a typical schedule for a VFX-heavy tentpole of this scale. With ambitious CGI and effects sequences reportedly in the pipeline, the studio will spend that time assembling and fine-tuning the finished picture.

“Done” — but not final: why the story and cast may still change

While principal photography wrapped and the Russo brothers reportedly called it a wrap on set, the production appears far from locked. Jackets distributed to crew members reportedly carried language suggesting the script and cast remain works in progress. Industry practice at Marvel — frequent rewrites, late-stage polishes and follow-up shoots — means cameras can start and stop many times before a final cut exists. Sources indicate a second phase of filming is planned to begin in January 2026, which is expected to include reshoots, rewrites and possibly changes to the cast list as schedules and creative needs dictate.

Who’s involved (so far)

The headline casting turn is Robert Downey Jr.’s reported arrival as Doctor Doom, joining a sprawling ensemble that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Florence Pugh, Hannah John-Kamen and David Harbour. Reports also name Ian McKellen (as Magneto) and Pedro Pascal in a high-profile role as Reed Richards among others expected to appear. Screenplay credits currently list Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, and Newton Thomas Sigel is attached as cinematographer. With so many major players on board, scheduling conflicts and creative recalibrations remain a practical reality.

What to expect and when you’ll see it

Marvel aims to deliver a heavily VFX-driven blockbuster that expands the MCU’s Multiverse storyline. After the extensive post-production period and the planned reshoot window, the studio has slated Avengers: Doomsday for release in theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026. Given the project’s scale, the run of late-stage tweaks — from fresh visual effects passes to last-minute script polish — is likely to continue well into the months before release.
