Warner Bros. has finally unleashed the first official trailer for Mortal Kombat II, the highly anticipated sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat. The film sees The Boys star Karl Urban stepping into the iconic role of Johnny Cage, the flashy martial arts movie star known for his ego, charm, and deadly skills.
Set to hit theaters on October 24, this sequel continues the saga of Earthrealm’s champions as they prepare for the most brutal tournament yet — and Johnny Cage is now part of the fight.
From Hollywood to the Tournament: Johnny Cage Joins the Fight
At the end of Mortal Kombat (2021), Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a descendant of the legendary Scorpion, was tasked with finding new recruits to protect Earthrealm. The closing moments hinted at the arrival of Johnny Cage, and now, that tease has paid off.
In the trailer, Urban’s Johnny Cage is first seen in a bar where a fan approaches him, recognizing the character from one of his old shows. When asked about a reboot, Cage casually dismisses it:
“Nobody wants that. Shit went out in the ’90s.”
The scene instantly captures Cage’s wit and ego, setting the tone for his role in the upcoming film. As he joins the Earthrealm fighters, Cage makes it clear he doesn’t need superpowers — his good looks and self-confidence are weapons enough.
“I’m just incredibly handsome,” he quips, staying true to the character’s cocky persona.
The Stakes Are Higher in Mortal Kombat II
The sequel raises the tension significantly. If Earth’s warriors lose this tournament, Outworld’s tyrannical ruler Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) will conquer Earthrealm. That makes every fight in the tournament a matter of survival.

Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the sequel, working from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, while producers James Wan, Todd Garner, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid himself round out the creative team.
Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Lingering Rivalries
Though Scorpion may not be fighting alongside Earth’s champions this time, his presence still holds weight. According to Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, Hanzo Hasashi will play a “different role” in this movie — one that’s “significant and necessary” for the advancement of other storylines.
Boon adds,
“He’s not part of the ‘Super Friends’ trying to defeat Shao Kahn, but his appearance is key and very essential for certain parts.”
The ever-evolving dynamic between Scorpion and Sub-Zero promises to remain a major thread in the sequel, continuing one of the franchise’s most iconic rivalries.
Karl Urban’s Fresh Take on Johnny Cage
While Johnny Cage has long been a fan-favorite in the Mortal Kombat games, Karl Urban brings his own spin to the role. Ed Boon explains that while Urban’s take deviates in some ways from the games, he offers a “fresh” and “novel” interpretation that still captures the essence of the character.
“He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing,” Boon says. “Karl’s depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways, but I think it’ll feel fresh.”
What to Expect: Fatalities, Battles, and Brutal Action
The sequel promises everything fans love about the franchise — jaw-dropping fights, intense visuals, returning legends, and a few iconic fatalities. Warner Bros. previewed the film at CinemaCon, where New Line chief Richard Brenner teased that fans should “expect amazing fights, epic battles, and a few fatalities.”
Given the critical and fan response to the first movie’s mix of video game loyalty and brutal action, Mortal Kombat II seems ready to up the ante.
