HBO has officially unveiled the first image of Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid in its much-anticipated Harry Potter TV series. This reveal follows shortly after the debut image of Dominic McLaughlin in full costume as Harry Potter, signaling that production for the series is now in full swing.

Nick Frost Steps Into the Role of Hagrid

British actor Nick Frost, best known for his roles in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, has taken on the beloved role of Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant Hogwarts groundskeeper. Frost’s portrayal brings a new dimension to the character that fans have long associated with the late Robbie Coltrane, who originated the role in the film adaptations.

In the newly released first-look image, Frost dons Hagrid’s signature bushy beard and unkempt hair, but with a twist. Rather than Coltrane’s iconic moleskin coat, Frost’s Hagrid wears a greenish long coat, paired with a button-up shirt and trousers. This creative change still honors J.K. Rowling’s original descriptions while offering a fresh visual take.

A Subtle Shift in Design and Interpretation

While Dominic McLaughlin’s Harry bears strong resemblance to Daniel Radcliffe’s version, Nick Frost’s Hagrid introduces a more noticeable design departure. His face is more visible than Coltrane’s heavily bearded depiction, perhaps allowing audiences to connect more directly with the actor’s performance.

This version of Hagrid is still familiar but comes with thoughtful costume updates that reflect the show’s intention to reinterpret rather than replicate the films. According to HBO’s approach, these changes are part of a broader effort to balance respect for the original material with creative renewal.

A Star-Studded Cast Assembles for the Series

Frost joins an ensemble cast that blends emerging talent with established stars. Key roles announced so far include:

  • Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
  • Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
  • Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
  • John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
  • Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
  • Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
  • Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy
  • Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy
  • Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley
  • Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley
  • Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley
  • Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom
  • Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch
  • Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley
  • Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander

This dynamic casting reflects HBO’s ambition to breathe new life into familiar characters, many of whom have already become cultural icons.

A Decade-Long Vision for the Franchise

The new Harry Potter series, slated to premiere on HBO Max in 2027, is being pitched as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books. The project is backed by a high-profile creative team, including:

  • Francesca Gardiner (writer and executive producer)
  • Mark Mylod (executive producer and director of multiple episodes)
  • J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts from Brontë Film and TV
  • David Heyman, the producer of the original film series, returns via Heyday Films

The show is a collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and Brontë Film and TV, with filming now officially underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden—the same location used for the original movie saga.

Embracing the New While Honoring the Legacy

Fans understandably feel a deep attachment to the original cast, especially Robbie Coltrane’s portrayal of Hagrid. But Nick Frost brings something new to the table without erasing what came before. His version respects the essence of Hagrid—a gentle giant with a love for magical creatures and a heart full of loyalty—while offering a fresh and grounded take for a new generation of fans.

As production moves forward, this HBO series appears poised to reignite the magic of the Wizarding World with reverence and innovation. And with casting choices like Frost’s Hagrid, audiences may find themselves both nostalgic and intrigued.
