Back and better than ever, Bob Odenkirk is bringing the mayhem with him this time around on what’s meant to be a relaxing family vacation. Universal Pictures has officially dropped the first trailer for Nobody 2, the fast-paced sequel to the 2021 cult action-thriller Nobody. The movie will arrive in theaters on August 15.

Plans Go Awry in ‘Nobody 2’

Odenkirk repeats his Hutch Mansell, who appears to be a normal suburban family man with a deadly set of assassin’s skills. Nobody 2 has Hutch trying to reconnect with wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) and kids by taking a summer vacation to a theme park. But harmony is not found easily. Danger soon finds him in the form of a sleazy sheriff (Colin Hanks) and a ruthless crime lord played by Sharon Stone.

As in the trailer, Becca expresses her annoyance at Hutch’s frequent vanishing acts: “We haven’t seen you in months, and summer break’s just a few days away.” Stone’s character then orders a manhunt, ordering her goons to bring in Hutch with the directive: “Scorched earth.”

And in classic Nobody style, the trailer is capped with Hutch handing out a savage beating as he yells, “I told you, I’m on fucking vacation.”

Star-Packed Cast and New Director

Odenkirk is joined by reprising cast members Christopher Lloyd, RZA, Michael Ironside, Colin Salmon, Billy MacLellan, Gage Munroe, and Paisley Cadorath. Sharon Stone, Colin Hanks, and John Ortiz join the mix in the sequel.

Replacing the director’s seat is Timo Tjahjanto, the director of The Night Comes for Us and May the Devil Take You. He is taking over for Ilya Naishuller, who originally directed the movie.

The sequel’s script goes to Derek Kolstad, writer of the first film, together with Aaron Rabin, Umair Aleem, and Bob Odenkirk himself.

A Cathartic Role for Odenkirk

Odenkirk also earlier disclosed that Nobody was inspired by real events. In a 2021 Variety interview, he explained how the film allowed him to cope with his own feelings after he had experienced home break-ins. “It really was cathartic, and I did not expect that,” he stated.

Production Team and Legacy of the First Film

Nobody 2 is made by Odenkirk and Marc Provissiero under Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment. Also making it are Braden Aftergood under Eighty Two Films, and Kelly McCormick and David Leitch under their 87North/Universal arrangement.

The first film, postponed because of the pandemic, finally opened in theaters in March 2021. It went on to lead the domestic box office on its opening weekend and grossed $57 million globally.

Owen Gleiberman, the film critic, referred to the opening movie as “a cardboard fable,” going on to say that although its message regarding submerged talent in ordinary people must not be exaggerated, the “ultraviolence” ensured the movie “pop.”

Classic Soundtrack, Contemporary Action

The trailer is accompanied by Lindsey Buckingham’s 1983 song “Holiday Road”, similarly utilized in National Lampoon’s Vacation, providing a raffish counterpoint for the high-octane action sequences.

With its blend of hard-edged humor, gritty violence, and family melodrama, Nobody 2 is poised to be one of the summer’s most explosive opening of the year.

Catch Bob Odenkirk’s return as Hutch Mansell when Nobody 2 is released in theaters on August 15.
