Matt Owens, the co-showrunner and co-developer of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, has announced his departure from the series. Owens has played a key role in bringing the beloved manga and anime to live-action, guiding the show through its first two seasons. As the series enters post-production for its second season, he has decided to step away to focus on his mental health.

Owens’ Emotional Farewell

Taking to Instagram, Owens shared a heartfelt message reflecting on his six-year journey with One Piece. He described his time working on the adaptation as a “life-changing journey” and a “dream come true.” However, he also acknowledged the immense pressure that came with the project, stating, “It’s also been A LOT. So I’m stepping off the Going Merry…” He expressed gratitude to One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and the entire cast and crew for their trust and dedication.

The official One Piece Instagram page reposted his message, acknowledging his contributions with the statement, “You set us on a course for something truly special.”

The Legacy Owens Leaves Behind

Since the beginning, Owens has been instrumental in shaping the live-action One Piece. He developed a long-term vision for the series and served as co-showrunner for both seasons—first alongside Steven Maeda in Season 1 and then with Joe Tracz in Season 2. Maeda continues as an executive producer, while Tracz will now oversee the remainder of Season 2’s post-production.

Owens’ departure may come as a disappointment to fans who admired his commitment to staying faithful to the original source material. The live-action One Piece was a major success, especially considering Netflix’s previous struggles with anime adaptations, such as Death Note and Cowboy Bebop. While Oda’s close involvement played a key role in the show’s success, Owens and Maeda’s efforts were equally significant in making the adaptation resonate with fans.

What’s Next for One Piece?

With One Piece Season 2 now in post-production, Netflix has yet to announce an official release date. The upcoming season will introduce several new cast members, including Daniel Lasker, Camrus Johnson, Jazzara Jaslyn, David Dastmalchian, Joe Manganiello, Julia Rehwald, Callum Kerr, and Katey Sagal. Many of these actors will portray members of Baroque Works, hinting at the show’s next major storyline.

Reports suggest that Netflix is already considering a third season, indicating that the series has a long journey ahead. Despite Owens’ departure, the creative team remains intact, with Tracz continuing in his role as co-showrunner.

Could Owens Return in the Future?

While Owens is stepping away, his departure may not be permanent. In his farewell message, he mentioned the need to “come back refreshed,” leaving the door open for a possible return. Given his deep passion for One Piece—which he has previously credited for helping him through difficult times—fans can hope that he might rejoin the series down the line, perhaps for a future season beyond Season 3.
