Roberto “Bob” Gaston Orci, a renowned writer and producer known for his work on blockbuster franchises such as Star Trek and Transformers, passed away at his home in Los Angeles on February 25, 2025, after battling kidney disease. He was 51.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born and raised in Mexico City, Orci moved to the United States at the age of 10. He later attended Crossroads School in Los Angeles, where he met his longtime creative partner, Alex Kurtzman. Together, they began their careers writing for popular television series like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. By the age of 24, they had established themselves as showrunners.
Hollywood Success: ‘Transformers’ and ‘Star Trek’
Orci made a significant impact in Hollywood with his writing and producing work on major action-adventure and science fiction films. Alongside Kurtzman, he co-wrote Transformers (2007) and its sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), both of which were massive box-office hits. His work on the Star Trek reboot in 2009 and its sequels further cemented his reputation as a creative force in sci-fi cinema.
Orci also contributed as a writer or producer on several other high-profile films, including Mission: Impossible III, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zorro, and The Mummy. He was also a producer on the Now You See Me franchise and Eagle Eye.
Television Legacy: ‘Fringe,’ ‘Hawaii Five-0,’ and More
Beyond the big screen, Orci left a lasting mark on television. He co-created and executive produced hit series such as Fringe and Sleepy Hollow for Fox and played a pivotal role in developing CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 reboot, which ran for over 200 episodes. He also worked on Alias and Scorpion.
Following his professional split from Kurtzman in 2014, Orci launched his own production company, Rubber Room Media, focused on writer-driven projects.
Personal Life and Legal Disputes
Orci was open about his struggles with alcoholism and his journey to recovery. However, his personal life was marred by legal disputes. In June 2024, he filed a lawsuit against his estranged wife, actress Adele Heather Taylor, accusing her of assault, battery, and financial abuse during his battle with addiction. In August 2024, Taylor countered with a lawsuit of her own, alleging that Orci had physically and sexually assaulted her and describing him as a bipolar alcoholic prone to violent outbursts. Both lawsuits were pending at the time of his death.

Despite the controversies, Orci is remembered for his immense contributions to film and television. His brother, J.R. Orci, described him as a “visionary storyteller with a boundless heart and a beautiful soul.” He was also known for his compassion, often helping strangers and adopting overlooked shelter dogs.
Orci is survived by his father, Roberto Orci Sr.; his mother, Macuqui Robau-Garcia; his stepmother, Jeanine Orci; his siblings, J.R. Orci, Taylor Orci, and Courtney Ford; and his beloved dog, Bogey.
His impact on the entertainment industry will not be forgotten, and his legacy lives on through the Stories he brought to life on screen.
