The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris is timely, loaded with humour, horror, and social commentary. This twisty story talks about ongoing issues of social injustice, race, class, and microaggressions mixed in with wit from stonewalling, gaslighting, and a wide range of strategies. To climb the stepping stool and get along in the work environment, what do these ladies of colour need to surrender along the way?

The Other Black Girl is fundamentally set in the working environment, and the reason behind it is understood as the story unfurls. I read this novel in one day, and I was unable to put it down – it was a book with incredible topics. In the start Nella was one and only black girl working at Wagner Books, a publishing company. At the point when Hazel, another black girl, begins to work at the organization, Nella is over the roof.

Hazel is her new partner and companion in the workplace, and she feels like she’s discovered a confidante in Hazel. After taking Hazel’s recommendation on an issue and having it backfire, she’s certain there’s a logical explanation. Out of nowhere, she’s getting notes threatening her to leave Wagner or face the outcomes. What could be going on?

No doubt this novel was a rollercoaster. I can’t say a lot regarding the plot and my thoughts about the characters without giving spoilers. I really liked the writing. The plot was well paced. It was written in a nonlinear timetable, with different sections occurring throughout various point in time, and told from various characters.

The secrets were all around created and I enjoyed the twists, turns, and large uncovers. The author keeps you speculating with suspense and the hair items, accessories, parties, and associations with this mysterious new black girl. Likewise, we meet her white boyfriend, her closest friend, and two ladies from the past additionally mixed into the storyline.

At the core of this book is a tale about black women in the working environment, the battles they face, and the adversities stacked against them. I loved Nella and Malaika’s friendship in the book. Well done! The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris is Highly recommended.
