Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman in Warner Bros. and DC films, is taking on a new mantle in the DC Universe. The actor has officially been cast as Lobo, the antihero from the planet Czarnia, in the upcoming DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This marks a significant shift for Momoa, who has long expressed enthusiasm for the role of Lobo.
A Dream Role for Momoa
Momoa’s attachment to Lobo has been no secret. In a recent Instagram post, he shared a screenshot of an old interview where he voiced his passion for playing the character. “I collect comics, and he was always my favorite. I always wanted to play Lobo,” said the actor. Known for his violent and irreverent persona, Lobo’s chaotic energy aligns perfectly with Momoa’s charismatic screen presence.
Adding to the excitement, Momoa captioned his Instagram post with, “They called,” signaling that his dream role has become a reality.
Who Is Lobo?
Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983. Often portrayed as a bounty hunter, the character thrives on chaos and destruction. With superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and near-invulnerability, Lobo has carved out a unique niche as an antihero in the DC Universe. His edgy personality and dark humor have made him a fan favorite over the decades.
What We Know About Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
The movie is an adaptation of Tom King’s 2022 comic book series of the same name, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film stars House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock as Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El. The plot details remain under wraps, but DC Studios co-head James Gunn has hinted at a darker, more complex take on the character.
Unlike Superman, who was raised on Earth by loving parents, Supergirl’s backstory is more tragic. Gunn explained, “She was raised on a rock chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.”
The film will also feature Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle.
Production and Release Date
Production for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to begin on January 13, 2025, with a theatrical release planned for June 26, 2026. The film is the second in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe, following Superman: Legacy.
A New Era for Jason Momoa and DC
Momoa’s casting as Lobo signals the end of his tenure as Aquaman, a role that brought Warner Bros. over $1.5 billion worldwide across two films. However, this transition opens new doors for both Momoa and the DC Universe.
In addition to Supergirl, Momoa has a busy schedule ahead. He’ll star in Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie and the live-action/animated hybrid Animal Friends. Fans can also look forward to his appearances in Fast X: Part 2, the Apple miniseries Chief of War, and Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew.
The Perfect Match
With Jason Momoa stepping into Lobo’s shoes, DC is poised to deliver a fresh, bold take on its cinematic universe. Momoa’s charisma and dedication to the role promise a thrilling portrayal of the fan-favorite antihero, while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow aims to redefine Supergirl’s legacy with a darker, more emotionally charged story. Fans will undoubtedly have their calendars marked for June 2026 to witness this exciting chapter unfold.
