10 Worst Movies made by DC: DC is a legendary figure in the superhero segment. The brand has given birth to some of the most iconic and popular superhero & supervillain characters. Their comics and storylines have made the characters a part of pop culture. But unfortunately the comics giant isn’t known for its movies. DC has always been criticized by the fans for failing to deliver quality content. While there is no denying that DC has delivered some fantastic films like Joker, Batman trilogy.
However, DC has mostly disappointed its fans. Their urge of making mass movies and toning down its intensity. The comics giant has mostly failed in its attempt of balancing between their originality (what DC fans want) and the market needs (what masses want). There is a constant blame game and brawl between the creators (directors) and production houses; who’s the main culprit for the failure of DC ventures on the big screen. So, let’s take a look at 10 worst films made by DC.
10 Worst Movies made by DC
Superman Returns (2006)
The first name on our list is a movie of DC’s poster boy ‘Superman’. We don’t need to tell how iconic & legendary the character of Superman has been and still holds a special place in the superhero genre fan’s heart. But unfortunately in recent years DC hasn’t been able to showcase the potential of the superhero on the big screen. Most of the Superman ventures haven’t performed well commercially but the 2006 Bryan Singer directed movie ‘Superman Returns’ was a complete blunder. In the movie Brandon Routh portrayed the character of Superman. The movie failed to create any buzz and hype post its release. Superman Returns is a forgettable venture for the actor, director and DC fans.
Green Lantern (2011)
Green Lantern was another attempt made by DC to revive its films mass appeal outside conventional DC fans. They wanted to open the door for more superheroes on the big screen. However the 2011 film (Green Lantern) failed to impress anyone, neither the critics nor the audiences liked the movie. Green Lantern failed and may say it failed for good as we later got to see Ray Reyno portraying Deadpool’s iconic character on the big screen.
The Losers (2010)
Turning a comic book series into a movie venture looks like a perfect plot on paper (for delivering a superhit film). However, the 2010 flick ‘The Losers’ was a real loss for DC on the big screen. The Sylvain White directed movie had Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Jeffery Dean and Chris Evans in the primary roles. Many felt that the film lost its charm in the transformation phase and the action was also hollow.
Justice League (2017)
Justice League is not that bad a film, especially when you look at the other films featured in the list. But what makes the 2017 Zack Snyder directed film a bad movie is its budget and hype. Justice League was a highly anticipated and awaited movie. Not only DC fans but the masses were also eagerly waiting for the film. Everyone thought the movie would be DC’s answer to Marvel’s avenger but JL failed to deliver. The conflicts between the creator & producer did the damage. The chops and cuts made in the movie killed it’s vibe & character.
Catwoman (2004)
Catwoman is a story about a shy lady. Catwoman has impressive skills like agility, reflexes and senses of a cat. She is not a typical superhero, Catwoman follows the grey path. Despite an impressive storyline and backdrop (comics ventures) the 2004 film flopped and failed to deliver. It was directed by Pitof and had Halle Berry & Sharon Stone in the primary roles.
Steel (1997)
Steel has to be one of the worst DC movies ever made. The 1997 movie was directed by Kenneth Johnson. Steel had a storyline where a scientist turns himself into a comic world like a superhero. The movie features the basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal. WB’s thought of turning the giant into a superhero and enhancing his popularity on the big screen. However, the movie tanked at the box office.
Robin’s Big Date (2005)
Next on the list is ‘Robin’s Big Date’. The 2005 venture was directed by James Duffy and written by Will Carlough. In the movie Sam Rockwell played the role of Batman, Callie Thorne played Kate’s role and Justine Long portrayed the character of Robin. The short seemed to be silly and was dismissed by most of the DC fans & Batman fans.
The Return of Swamp Thing (1989)
It has been seen that sequels don’t live up to the expectations. Same thing happened with the 1989 Jim Wynorski directed film ‘The Return of Swamp Thing’. The story is about a brutal creature who falls in love with an ordinary girl. The movie featured Dick Durock and Heather Locklear in the main leads. Where Durock portrayed the role of Swamp Thing and Heather played Abby’s role.
Batman & Robin (1997)
Joel Schumacher’s 1997 movie Batman & Robin was unintentionally funny and embarrassing to say the least. From weird costumes to illogical taglines & dialogues the film had everything to make it a film not worth watching. The movie had a storyline where the duo of Batman and Robin try maintain their relationship & bond while saving the city from villains like Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy. This movie had a legendary cast where George Clooney plays the character of Batman, Chris O’Donnell plays Robin’s role, Uma Thurman plays Ivy, Alicia plays Batgirl and Arnold portrayed the character of Mr. Freeze.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Last on the list is another highly anticipated Zack Snyder movie ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. It may be the best in the list but definitely deserves to be in the list of worst DC movies. Even the most iconic duo of DC (Superman and Batman) failed to save the 2016 venture. The reason may be the interference of the production house or the creators’ failure in executing mega projects within the timeline will be a debate for some other day. However, Snyder’s potential can’t be questioned but his collaboration with DC & WB has been unfortunate.
