10 DC Villains Who Ruled The World
Joker
The Joker, a notorious street-level villain in DC Comics, is more focused on creating chaos and defeating Batman than world domination. Despite his dangerous nature, the lack of superpowers has prevented him from causing widespread destruction.
However, everything changed when he obtained the power of Mr. Mxyzptlk, the imp from the Fifth Dimension with reality-altering abilities. This transformation turned Joker into the infamous Emperor Joker, an omnipotent being with control over all. He ruled the world with merciless brutality, committing heinous acts just for the sake of it. Luckily, Batman and Superman devised a strategy to trick the Joker into relinquishing his newfound powers.
The Anti-Monitor
Amongst the DC villains with one of the highest kill counts, the Anti-Monitor stands out as the most destructive. His multiverse rampage left countless universes in ruins, but his ultimate objective was to control energy by transforming everything into anti-matter. Although he briefly ruled over Earth, his conquest was short-lived as he prepared for his final strike. Just before the final battle, the heroes believed they had won as they went back in time to fight the Anti-Monitor, but they were fooled. In reality, the Anti-Monitor had deposited the planet in the anti-matter universe and had complete control over it. He held all the cards, leaving the heroes at his mercy.
Darkseid
Darkseid is one of DC Comics’ most dangerous and powerful villains, feared for his immense power and malevolent nature. As the ruler of Apokolips, he has waged a never-ending battle against New Genesis for centuries. While his attempts to conquer Earth have often been foiled by its superheroes, Darkseid once gained control of half the planet’s population in an instant through the Anti-Life Equation. He turned them into soldiers to wage war against the Justice League and nearly succeeded in taking over the world. However, the heroes rallied and overcame Darkseid, freeing the population from his grasp.
The Crime Syndicate
One of the most formidable villainous teams in the DC universe is undoubtedly the Crime Syndicate. Originating from Earth-3, they are a twisted version of the Justice League, harnessing their abilities for malevolent purposes. With each member serving as a dark reflection of a Justice League hero, they are constantly at odds with their heroic counterparts. Ruling over Earth-3 with an unwavering iron grip, the Crime Syndicate is unstoppable, with no challenge to their authority going unanswered. In the New 52 storyline, they even managed to overpower the Justice League and nearly succeeded in conquering Prime Earth. However, in a surprise turn of events, Lex Luthor led a team of villains in a daring mission to stop them.
Perpetua
Perpetua, the most dominant adversary of the Justice League, poses a great threat due to her immense power. She created the multiverse earlier but utilized it as a weapon to combat the Hands, her counterparts in the omnipotent multiverse-constructing species. Despite being vanquished and incarcerated beyond the Source Wall, she made her way back in when it was breached during the clash with Barbatos.
By employing Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom, Perpetua spread destruction throughout the cosmos. She succeeded in conquering the universe after tipping the balance in her favor and defeating the Justice League. However, her assault on the multiverse was thwarted, and she met her demise in battle against the Batman Who Laughs before achieving her ultimate objective.
Mordru
As the Lord of Chaos, he has caused significant trouble for both the Justice Society and the Legion of Super-Heroes, his most impressive feat being the overthrow of Nabu in the present day. With the help of Obsidian and Eclipso, Mordru was able to take over the Earth, although he was the driving force behind the plan. He devised the strategy and recruited the others, and it was only after his defeat that their power was truly shattered. Though Eclipso and Obsidian were instrumental, Mordru was the mastermind behind the entire operation.
Obsidian
Obsidian is the child of Alan Scott and Thorn, and he possesses the power to control shadows, which he draws from the Shadowlands. Sadly, he and his twin sister Jade were put into foster care after their mother abandoned them, and their father was unaware of their existence. To make matters worse, Obsidian was placed with an abusive family, and the combination of his shadow powers and childhood trauma ultimately caused him to become mentally unstable despite his years as a hero.
Fueled by a desire for revenge against his father, Obsidian teamed up with Mordru and Eclipso to try and take over the world and destroy the Justice Society. With Mordru’s magic and his own shadow powers, he created a never-ending eclipse, which allowed Eclipso to control entire armies. Although his father ultimately defeated him, Obsidian was eventually saved and redeemed by the love of his family.
Omega
In Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman: Last Knight on Earth, the Dark Knight finds himself waking up in Arkham Asylum, convinced that his entire life as Batman was a fabrication. However, he soon discovers that the world has been ravaged by a villain called Omega, leaving him to join forces with other surviving heroes like Wonder Woman. As they work together to defeat Omega and his band of villainous cohorts who are ruling the world, a stunning truth is revealed: Omega is none other than the original Batman who has gone rogue and is using his vast resources for evil. While the heroes ultimately defeat Omega, the world is left with unimaginable destruction.
The Ultra-Humanite
The Ultra-Humanite is an archetypal comic book villain, known for his mad scientist persona. During the Golden Age, he posed as Superman’s greatest adversary and created persistent troubles for the Justice Society. By transferring his brain into an albino gorilla’s body from Gorilla City, he acquired the physical strength to match his intellect. Nevertheless, he accomplished his most successful conquest while inhabiting a frail body. In this instance, he infiltrated the elderly Johnny Thunder’s body, coerced Jakeem Thunder into returning the Thunderbolt, and employed its power to take over the world. Despite being virtually invincible, a motley crew of heroes and villains led by Jakeem ultimately vanquished him.
Batman Who Laughs
Batman has many versions, but fortunately, most of them are heroic. However, an evil Batman can be a terrifying figure. The Batman Who Laughs was an especially dangerous threat, possessing both the intelligence of Batman and the madness of the Joker. He challenged Lex Luthor for the position of chief servant of Perpetua and emerged victorious. After Perpetua defeated the Justice League in battle, the Batman Who Laughs and she took control of the multiverse. On a composite world made up of fragments from various Earths, he ruled the Earth. Eventually, he defeated Perpetua, claiming her control over the remaining pieces of the multiverse for himself.
