More than four decades after the original Tron lit up movie screens, Disney is bringing the digital universe back with Tron: Ares, the third installment in the iconic sci-fi series. The first official trailer has finally arrived, giving fans a thrilling peek into the high-tech chaos set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025.
Ares Enters the Real World
Tron: Ares introduces Jared Leto as Ares, a powerful program from the Grid who is sent into the real world on a dangerous mission. According to the film’s logline, this marks humanity’s first contact with AI beings in the Tron universe, setting the stage for a high-stakes collision between digital and human realities.
The trailer wastes no time showing off the action, opening with a high-speed chase where law enforcement attempts to keep up with rogue programs riding light cycles. In classic Tron style, one cop car meets its end when a light wall slices it clean in half.
Jeff Bridges Returns as Kevin Flynn
While Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn doesn’t physically appear in the trailer, his voice resonates with nostalgia and gravity. As Ares is digitally formed, Flynn’s voice delivers the haunting line: “Ready? Because there’s no going back.”
Bridges, who first appeared in the 1982 original and reprised his role in Tron: Legacy (2010), reflected on the franchise’s legacy during the film’s unveiling at D23 Expo 2024. “It’s amazing — we never thought we would have this legacy that’s continued on all these years,” he said.
An Ensemble Cast and Familiar Names
Joining Leto and Bridges is a stacked ensemble cast, including:
- Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger, a character whose surname suggests a possible link to Ed Dillinger, the villain from the original film
- Greta Lee
- Jodie Turner-Smith
- Cameron Monaghan
- Sarah Desjardins
- Hasan Minhaj
- Arturo Castro
- Gillian Anderson
Peters is seen in the trailer gazing skyward as ominous red lasers streak across the sky, hinting at major disruptions coming from the Grid.
Directed by Joachim Rønning
The film is directed by Joachim Rønning, known for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. He steps into the Tron universe to helm what Disney hopes will be a worthy continuation of the beloved franchise.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Score the Film
Adding another layer of excitement is the film’s score, which comes from Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The Oscar- and Grammy-winning duo brings their signature atmospheric and industrial sound, having previously scored The Social Network, Soul, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Their intense, immersive style is expected to amplify Tron: Ares’ digital chaos.
A Legacy That Still Glows
At CinemaCon, Jared Leto shared his deep admiration for the franchise, calling Tron a defining part of his childhood. “It was the ‘80s, and the future felt like it was just around the corner,” he said. “Tron had action, adventure, spandex — lots of spandex.” He promised the new film would deliver a powerful experience for longtime fans: “It’ll hit you right in the grid, wherever that is.”
With nostalgic callbacks, fresh characters, and a visual style that bridges the digital and real worlds, Tron: Ares looks ready to reignite the franchise for a new generation.
