Warner Bros. has officially released the highly anticipated trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a documentary that delves into the life and legacy of the late Christopher Reeve, who became a global icon through his portrayal of Superman. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the documentary offers an in-depth look at Reeve’s extraordinary journey—from his rise to superstardom as the Man of Steel to his determined efforts to find a cure for spinal cord injuries after a horse riding accident left him a quadriplegic.

The film, which made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, has already garnered critical acclaim. Variety’s chief film critic, Owen Gleiberman, lauded the documentary as “moving, wrenching, [and] compellingly well-made,” highlighting the richness of its narrative. Gleiberman noted that while many are familiar with the broad strokes of Reeve’s life story, Super/Man provides a detailed portrayal that adds a new level of depth and understanding to his legacy.

A Deeply Personal Insight

What sets Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story apart is its use of personal archive footage and contributions from Reeve’s family, offering viewers a unique and intimate perspective on the actor’s life. Matthew Reeve, Christopher’s son, has expressed deep gratitude for the documentary, which features previously unseen footage and interviews. “It is a gift. We’re so lucky,” Matthew Reeve told Variety. “We not only have his films to look at but a collection of home movies to dig up and go through and interviews on YouTube of him to pull up. Seeing things I hadn’t seen before didn’t change my perception of him but enhanced it…like some rare Australian interview done in 1977 that was uploaded and I didn’t know existed. It was pretty cool to see that and uncover a lot more material than we knew about.”

This wealth of previously unseen material not only enriches the documentary but also offers fans and newcomers alike a deeper understanding of Christopher Reeve’s indomitable spirit and the personal struggles he faced after his life-altering accident.

Theatrical Release and Special Presentation

As of now, a broader theatrical release has not been announced, but the documentary is expected to captivate audiences with its emotional and inspiring narrative.

For those who have followed Christopher Reeve’s career and admired his resilience, Super/Man promises to be a powerful tribute to a man who truly embodied the spirit of a hero, both on and off the screen. With Warner Bros. behind the project, and the trailer now out, anticipation is building for what is sure to be a must-see documentary event.
