With the highly anticipated DCU reboot in full swing, expectations are sky-high for the new slate of productions coming from DC Studios. While the animated series Creature Commandos has officially kickstarted the new cinematic universe and Superman: Legacy is set to open the big-screen chapter in 2025, many fans are still asking: What’s The Future of The Flash in the DCU? And why James Gunn is taking his time?

James Gunn, DC Studios’ co-CEO, has been transparent about his approach to building a cohesive and well-organized universe. However, when it comes to the Scarlet Speedster, Gunn has made it clear that the studio is “holding a beat.” Here’s what we know so far.

Why Clayface Before The Flash?

In response to fans questioning why DC Studios prioritized a film about the lesser-known villain Clayface over more prominent heroes like The Flash or Wonder Woman, Gunn gave a straightforward explanation: the script was ready.

“The number one rule here at DC is: No movie will be greenlit before the script is ready,” Gunn said, referring to Mike Flanagan’s completed screenplay for Clayface. This approach reflects Gunn’s commitment to ensuring that every project starts on solid creative footing.

While Clayface is scheduled for release on September 11, 2026, Gunn’s comments suggest that readiness is the primary factor in deciding DC Studios’ release order—not the popularity of the character.

What’s Holding The Flash Back?

The hesitation to dive into a new Flash project isn’t entirely surprising. The 2023 film The Flash, starring Ezra Miller, was a commercial disappointment, grossing just over $271 million worldwide despite a budget exceeding $200 million. The movie’s lackluster performance, combined with Miller’s off-screen legal troubles, left a lasting shadow over the character’s cinematic future.

Gunn has not explicitly tied the delay to the previous film’s controversies, but it’s widely believed that the studio is taking its time to distance itself from the baggage. This approach could also allow them to craft a fresh take on the character that aligns with the vision of the new DCU.

Grant Gustin: A Fan Favorite in Waiting?

One name that consistently comes up in fan discussions is Grant Gustin, who played Barry Allen on The CW’s The Flashfrom 2014 to 2023. Gustin himself has expressed interest in returning to the role if given the opportunity. While he’s reportedly had conversations with Gunn, the topic of The Flash hasn’t been broached—at least publicly.

For now, the casting of a new Flash remains one of the biggest question marks in the DCU. Will the studio stick with a familiar face or bring in a fresh talent to redefine the character?

A New Era of Patience and Planning

Under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, DC Studios is emphasizing meticulous planning and quality storytelling. Projects like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface are already in motion, signaling that the studio is prioritizing readiness over rushing iconic characters to the screen.

While this approach might test fans’ patience, it’s a strategy designed to rebuild trust and excitement after the tumultuous DCEU era. The Flash’s absence might feel like a gap, but when the character eventually speeds back into the spotlight, the hope is that it will be worth the wait.

The Bottom Line

The DCU is moving forward with a fresh slate of films and a commitment to quality over quantity. Although it may be a while before The Flash re-enters the cinematic universe, the groundwork being laid now suggests a brighter future for the character—and for DC Studios as a whole.

For now, fans can look forward to what’s already confirmed and trust that when The Flash does return, it will be on solid footing, ready to make an impact in the new DCU.
