Anthony and Joseph Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, may soon be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to direct the next two “Avengers” movies. The dynamic duo, who have previously directed four of Marvel Studios’ most successful and critically acclaimed films, are reportedly in early negotiations to work on the fifth and sixth installments in the franchise. This exciting news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
A Storied Marvel Career
The Russo Brothers began their journey with Marvel in 2014 with the release of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” They continued their streak with “Captain America: Civil War,” and their contributions culminated in the phase-defining films “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” The latter became the second-highest grossing movie in history, raking in $2.79 billion, while “Infinity War” secured its place as the sixth biggest with $2.05 billion.
Projects and Productions Beyond Marvel
Post-“Endgame,” the Russos shifted their focus to a variety of projects through their AGBO banner. They were producers on the critically acclaimed “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which won the Best Picture Oscar, and also collaborated with streamers on projects like the “Citadel” series for Amazon and the “Extraction” movies for Netflix. For OTT platforms, they directed “Cherry” for Apple TV+ and “The Gray Man” for Netflix. Their upcoming movie, “The Electric State,” is also backed by Netflix and stars Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown.
Directorial Contention and Current Projects
The search for directors for the new “Avengers” films has been extensive. Destin Daniel Cretton, known for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” was initially attached to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” but left the project in 2023. “Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy was offered the role but declined. Michael Waldron, the creator of “Loki,” has been hired to write the screenplay for “The Kang Dynasty,” while “Secret Wars” currently lacks a screenwriter.
Challenges and Changes
The upcoming “Avengers” films, formerly titled “The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” are expected to undergo significant changes. Following Jonathan Majors’ conviction for assault and harassment, Marvel Studios severed ties with the actor, who had played multiple versions of the villain Kang in the Disney+ series “Loki” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” As a result, the project will be retitled and refocused. “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” is set to release on May 1, 2026, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” is eyeing a May 7, 2027 release.
