Anthony and Joseph Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, may soon be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to direct the next two âAvengersâ movies. The dynamic duo, who have previously directed four of Marvel Studiosâ most successful and critically acclaimed films, are reportedly in early negotiations to work on the fifth and sixth installments in the franchise. This exciting news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
A Storied Marvel Career
The Russo Brothers began their journey with Marvel in 2014 with the release of âCaptain America: The Winter Soldier.â They continued their streak with âCaptain America: Civil War,â and their contributions culminated in the phase-defining films âAvengers: Infinity Warâ and âAvengers: Endgame.â The latter became the second-highest grossing movie in history, raking in $2.79 billion, while âInfinity Warâ secured its place as the sixth biggest with $2.05 billion.
Projects and Productions Beyond Marvel
Post-âEndgame,â the Russos shifted their focus to a variety of projects through their AGBO banner. They were producers on the critically acclaimed âEverything Everywhere All at Once,â which won the Best Picture Oscar, and also collaborated with streamers on projects like the âCitadelâ series for Amazon and the âExtractionâ movies for Netflix. For OTT platforms, they directed âCherryâ for Apple TV+ and âThe Gray Manâ for Netflix. Their upcoming movie, âThe Electric State,â is also backed by Netflix and stars Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown.
Directorial Contention and Current Projects
The search for directors for the new âAvengersâ films has been extensive. Destin Daniel Cretton, known for âShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,â was initially attached to direct âAvengers: The Kang Dynastyâ but left the project in 2023. âDeadpool & Wolverineâ director Shawn Levy was offered the role but declined. Michael Waldron, the creator of âLoki,â has been hired to write the screenplay for âThe Kang Dynasty,â while âSecret Warsâ currently lacks a screenwriter.
Challenges and Changes
The upcoming âAvengersâ films, formerly titled âThe Kang Dynastyâ and âAvengers: Secret Wars,â are expected to undergo significant changes. Following Jonathan Majorsâ conviction for assault and harassment, Marvel Studios severed ties with the actor, who had played multiple versions of the villain Kang in the Disney+ series âLokiâ and âAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.â As a result, the project will be retitled and refocused. âAvengers: The Kang Dynastyâ is set to release on May 1, 2026, while âAvengers: Secret Warsâ is eyeing a May 7, 2027 release.
