Netflix has officially announced the renewal of the highly anticipated sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” for its second and third seasons. This decision, revealed during Netflix’s Upfront event in May 2024, marks a significant milestone for the show, which has been a subject of much speculation and excitement among fans.

The series, created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, is based on Liu Cixin’s critically acclaimed “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy. The first season primarily adapted the initial book, “The Three-Body Problem,” introducing viewers to a complex narrative involving extraterrestrial threats and profound scientific dilemmas.

Netflix confirmed that there will be two more seasons of “3 Body Problem,” the sci-fi series about the end of a world and an alien invasion, based on Chinese writer Cixin Liu’s book trilogy. In a press release on the renewal of the series, the creators stated: “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”.

Despite a slow start following its March 2024 premiere, “3 Body Problem” eventually topped Netflix’s TV charts for three consecutive weeks, garnering a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This performance was a key factor in the decision to continue the series. The show’s creators expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunity to tell the entire story, hinting at an epic conclusion that will likely span multiple seasons.

The renewal announcement, however, was deliberately vague about the exact number of upcoming seasons. This ambiguity suggests that Netflix is leaving room for flexibility in adapting the extensive and intricate source material. The creative team is reportedly hard at work on the second season, which is expected to delve deeper into the rich narrative of Liu Cixin’s trilogy, with production possibly starting later this year and a release targeted for late 2025 or early 2026.
