Most Powerful Dragons In DC Comics
Ladon
Ladon, one of DC’s most daunting dragons, gained immense popularity after his appearance alongside the formidable Daughters of Atlas in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Despite being the guardian of the Golden Apples in the Garden of the Hesperides, Ladon’s limited comic appearances in the past failed to showcase his true potential as a menacing character.
However, in Fury of the Gods, Ladon’s depiction as a wooden dragon emitting a mythical blue flame from every pore of his body instills a sense of terror in the audience. This is a significant departure from his earlier portrayal, where he was mostly shown in the background of the Garden of Hesperides. Hence, Ladon’s character in Fury of the Gods is a far more powerful and awe-inspiring rendition than his previous depictions in the comics.
Typhoeus
Initially, the New Teen Titans came face to face with a human-like manifestation of the Father of Monsters, Typhon. However, in later events, Wonder Woman encountered Typhoeus himself, who was also referred to as Set throughout history. As Typhoeus, he takes the form of a mighty dragon and Titan of Myth, possessing godly strength, the ability to fly, and breathe flames. For ages, Zeus had imprisoned Typhoeus underneath Mount Etna in Italy, but Wonder Woman ultimately liberated him while serving Hecate. Nonetheless, her mission was not without challenges as Ares, who also desired to claim Typhoeus as a trophy for the Greek Gods, battled her.
Barbatos
The World Forger created a dragon named Barbatos, with the purpose of consuming his failed universes. However, Barbatos betrayed the World Forger and stopped consuming failed universes. As a result, the Dark Multiverse was formed. Barbatos was driven by the desire for power and intended to raise the Dark Multiverse. To achieve this goal, he manipulated Bruce Wayne’s life and orchestrated events to create Batman. Barbatos commands an army of Dark Knights and possesses extraordinary reality-altering abilities, which make him one of the DC universe’s most potent dragons.
Nightwing & Flamebird
Dick Grayson and Bette Kane are often recognized by the superhero names Nightwing and Flamebird. It is worth noting that Grayson chose the name Nightwing after hearing a story from Superman about the Kryptonian gods. According to the story, Nightwing was a dragon hunter created by Rao, the sun god of Krypton. Rao could not explore the shadows, so Nightwing was tasked with this job. Flamebird, on the other hand, was Rao’s daughter, and she fell in love with Nightwing. However, their happiness was short-lived as their enemy, Vohc, trapped Nightwing in the Phantom Zone, separating the two lovers. Fortunately, Nightwing and Flamebird were later reunited as new Kryptonian avatars.
Joker Dragon
During the Dark Nights: Metal event, Barbatos shared some of his sinister intentions for Batman, but he was not the only noteworthy dragon featured in the crossover. Fans were surprised when Batman rode into combat on a Joker Dragon.
Barbatos had called upon the Joker Dragons from the Dark Multiverse to assist The Batman Who Laughs and his Dark Knights. However, Batman managed to commandeer one of them and use it to confront Barbatos. The Joker Dragons possess the ability to breathe fire and fly at extraordinary speeds, but they have a specific vulnerability to Nth metal, which is utilized by heroes such as Hawkman.
The Three Faces Of Evil
The Shazam Family has had encounters with dragons other than Ladon. Previously referred to as the Marvel Family, they encountered the Three Faces of Evil, a triple-headed dragon from another dimension. This dragon possessed the ability to corrupt and control the thoughts of others, breathe fire, and alter its monstrous appearance. The Three Faces of Evil were initially trapped by The Wizard within the mystical Rock of Eternity.
Goliath
After relocating to the Batcave, Damian Wayne became the caretaker of several animals, a hobby that started when he befriended a baby dragon bat named Goliath while training with the League of Assassins. Damian nurtured Goliath into a formidable ally before leaving him with his mother and venturing to Gotham City with his father. However, Damian later reunited with Goliath, whose remarkable abilities, including flight and extraordinary strength, made him a valuable partner to Damian during his stint as Robin. Nonetheless, Damian eventually chose to liberate Goliath.
