Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Trailer Teases Titan X and the First True Godzilla–Kong Team-Up

Godzilla and Kong may not be returning to theaters until 2027, but Monsterverse fans won’t have to wait that long to see the iconic Titans reunite. The newly released trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 confirms that both Godzilla and Kong are back in action, this time facing an entirely new and terrifying threat lurking beneath the ocean.

The spotlight of the trailer isn’t just on the familiar Titans, though. Instead, the real star is a mysterious underwater creature known for now as Titan X. Described as far more than just another monster, Titan X is introduced as a “living cataclysm,” a bioluminescent force so powerful that its emergence alone feels like a global disaster waiting to happen. In one of the trailer’s most striking moments, the creature rises from the depths, wraps its tentacles around a ship, and drags it straight back into the sea.

Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw sets the tone early with a chilling line: this new threat is bigger than both Kong and Godzilla. Still, he quickly makes it clear that the only way to stop a monster of this scale is with monsters of their own. Not everyone agrees with the plan, fearing that unleashing two alpha Titans could make an already catastrophic situation even worse.

Picking Up After Season 1

Season 2 picks up directly after the dramatic ending of the first season. Cate Randa, Keiko, and May barely escaped Axis Mundi and found themselves on Skull Island two years later. Now, the story follows them as they dig deeper into the secrets of Skull Island and the Monarch organization, while also dealing with the consequences of what they may have unleashed.

The trailer suggests that Titan X originated from Axis Mundi, which explains why the creature eventually makes its way to Skull Island. Its octopus-like design and god-like status among sea creatures have led some to believe it could be connected to Na Kika, a powerful ocean entity within Monsterverse lore. What’s certain is that Titan X appears in both timelines explored in the show, including the 1950s storyline involving a younger version of Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell.

Alongside Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, several returning cast members are back, including Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett, and Anders Holm. Together, the human characters must grapple with the realization that they may have triggered a disaster far beyond their control.

The trailer also hints at deeper exploration of Skull Island, including the infamous mass grave seen in Kong: Skull Island, home to the deadly Skullcrawlers. There are even signs that other creatures, like Mother Longlegs, could make a return, adding even more danger to an already chaotic setting.

One of the biggest takeaways from the trailer is that this marks the first official team-up between Godzilla and Kong within the Monsterverse timeline itself. While audiences have already seen them fight and unite in the movies, Season 2 is set around 2017–2018, well before their big-screen alliance in 2024’s The New Empire. This makes their partnership here feel especially significant, potentially rewriting how fans view their relationship.

Given the destruction caused when they first crossed paths, their reunion in the series promises even greater spectacle, especially with a threat as overwhelming as Titan X.

Season 2 will help bridge the gap until the Titans return to cinemas in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the next major theatrical installment in the franchise. Directed by Grant Sputore, the film is currently in post-production and will serve as a sequel to The New Empire.
