The excitement for “Moana 2” is already at a fever pitch. The recently released trailer has achieved an extraordinary milestone, becoming the most viewed trailer in the history of Disney Animation and Pixar. Within the first 24 hours of its release, the trailer was viewed by a staggering 178 million people, surpassing all previous records held by Disney’s animated films.
The original “Moana,” released in 2016, was a monumental success, grossing over $687 million globally. Its enduring appeal was evident when it became the most streamed movie across all platforms in 2023, according to Nielsen.
Previously, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” held the record with 157 million views, and Disney Animation’s “Frozen 2” followed with 116 million views. The “Moana 2” trailer has even outperformed Pixar’s “Incredibles 2,” which garnered 113 million views. This remarkable achievement underscores the immense anticipation and enduring popularity of the “Moana” franchise.
“Moana 2” is set to premiere in theaters on November 27. The sequel brings back beloved voice stars Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui. The animated feature is directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller. The story centers on Moana embarking on a thrilling new adventure into uncharted waters, driven by a mysterious call from her ancestors.
The trailer for “Moana 2” will also be shown before screenings of “Inside Out 2,” which hits theaters on June 14. The latter is projected to have a strong opening, with estimates ranging between $80 million and $85 million, and some projections suggesting it might exceed $90 million. This positive momentum is crucial for Disney’s animation division, especially given Pixar’s recent struggles.
“Moana 2” includes fresh musical compositions from the talented Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, with production controlled by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino. Originally envisioned as a television series, the project was later reimagined as a theatrical sequel, much to the delight of fans.
In addition to the animated sequel, Disney and Dwayne Johnson are collaborating on a live-action remake of “Moana,” directed by Thomas Kail, scheduled for release on July 10, 2026. “Moana 2” promises to continue the legacy of first movie “moana”, blending breath-taking animation, compelling storytelling, and memorable music into an epic adventure that fans of all ages can enjoy.
