Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Delayed to April 2026: Here’s Everything We Know

Fans eagerly awaiting the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, will now have to wait a little longer. Originally slated for release in April 2025, the film has been officially delayed and will now hit theaters on April 24, 2026. The highly anticipated movie, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, promises to explore the life and legacy of the King of Pop—but it hasn’t been an easy road to the screen.

From April 2025 to April 2026: What Caused the Delay?

Initially scheduled for April 18, 2025, the film’s release was first postponed to October 2025, before being pushed back again to April 2026. According to sources close to the production, the biggest reason for the delay involved complications surrounding the film’s third act. This portion reportedly addressed the 1993 molestation accusations made by then-13-year-old Jordan Chandler, which led to a $20 million settlement.

However, a confidential agreement between Jackson’s camp and Chandler’s legal representatives allegedly prohibited the dramatization of Chandler’s story. When this issue surfaced, it necessitated a series of script rewrites and 22 days of reshoots, halting the momentum of the project and forcing the creative team to rethink the film’s narrative approach.

A Shift in Focus: The Biopic May Now Be Split in Two

As reported by Lionsgate and The Hollywood Reporter, the delays also prompted serious consideration about dividing the film into two parts. With over three and a half hours of footage already shot, Lionsgate is evaluating whether it makes more sense to present Jackson’s story across two separate films.

For now, the newly scheduled April 24, 2026 release will center on the first half of Jackson’s life and career—from his rise in The Jackson 5 to the groundbreaking release of his 1979 solo album, Off the Wall. If the second film moves forward, it would likely chronicle his later years, including his monumental albums Thriller and Bad, but will avoid directly addressing the abuse allegations.

Behind the Camera: A Talented Creative Team

Michael brings together a formidable team of creatives. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for Training Day and The Equalizer series. The script is penned by John Logan, a three-time Oscar nominee whose previous works include Gladiator and Skyfall. The project is produced by Graham King, the Oscar-winning producer behind Bohemian Rhapsody.

Notably, the Jackson estate is directly involved in the film’s production, which has ensured access to Jackson’s music catalog and close family connections—including casting Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role.

A Star-Studded Cast Bringing the Jackson Legacy to Life

Joining Jaafar Jackson in the film are:

  • Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael Jackson
  • Colman Domingo as Michael’s father, Joe Jackson
  • Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother
  • Miles Teller as John Branca, Jackson’s longtime advisor and attorney
  • Larenz Tate as Motown founder Berry Gordy
  • Laura Harrier as music executive Suzanne de Passe
  • Kat Graham as legendary singer Diana Ross

This ensemble cast aims to portray not only the personal journey of Michael Jackson but also the broader story of his family, music career, and cultural impact.

A Strategic Release Window

The rescheduled date of April 24, 2026, gives Michael a strategic advantage at the box office. It avoids direct competition with major titles like The Mummy and 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank releasing a week earlier, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Animal Friends set to release a week later on May 1, 2026. With no major competition currently listed for April 24, the new release window may prove beneficial for the film’s success.
