In a fresh casting scoop from the ever-expanding DC Universe, acclaimed filmmaker James Gunn has made a pivotal choice for his upcoming cinematic venture, “Superman.” Neva Howell, known for her roles in “Fever Dreams” and “Logan Lucky,” has been tapped to embody Martha Kent, the emblematic adoptive mother of Clark Kent. Howell joins Pruitt Taylor Vince, recently announced as Jonathan Kent, to complete the Kent family duo in this much-anticipated reboot.
Howell’s diverse acting portfolio includes appearances in popular TV series like “The Originals” and “The Resident,” showcasing her versatility across different genres. This new role places her in a lineage of esteemed actresses who’ve portrayed Martha Kent, from Phyllis Thaxter’s 1978 rendition to Diane Lane’s portrayal in the 2013 blockbuster, “Man of Steel.”
The casting update aligns with DC Studios’ ambitious vision, spearheaded by Gunn and co-executive Peter Safran, to revitalize their superhero roster. “Superman” marks the inaugural film of the new DCU (DC Universe) timeline, promising a fresh start with a blend of familiar faces and new talents.
David Corenswet leads the ensemble as the iconic Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The star-studded cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced, among others, each bringing to life beloved comic book characters. The film is poised to make a significant impact with its dynamic cast and innovative storytelling, aiming to set a high benchmark for subsequent DCU projects.
As fans eagerly anticipate the release of “Superman” in theaters on July 11, 2025, the DCU is also set to introduce “Creature Commandos,” an animated series slated for a 2024 debut on Max. This series will serve as a prelude to the interconnected universe that Gunn and Safran are meticulously crafting, offering audiences a glimpse into the DCU’s expansive narrative ambitions.
