The long-lost live-action Powerpuff Girls pilot, which The CW ordered and shot in 2021 before shelving it indefinitely, has resurfaced. Leaked footage from the project made its way onto YouTube, igniting social media discussions and offering fans a glimpse into what could have been. While Warner Bros. Entertainment swiftly took down the leaked content over copyright concerns, its brief appearance was enough to generate strong reactions.

A Star-Studded Yet Doomed Attempt

The CW’s Powerpuff starred Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Blossom, Dove Cameron (Liv and Maddie) as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill) as Buttercup. Donald Faison (Scrubs) portrayed their creator, Professor Drake Utonium, while Nicholas Podany played Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., the son of Mojo Jojo. The show aimed to reimagine the beloved Cartoon Network series, transforming the iconic crime-fighting trio into disillusioned young adults grappling with their lost childhood.

Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden served as executive producers, while Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and Heather V. Regnier handled writing duties. However, despite its promising creative team, the pilot faced significant hurdles. The CW deemed the initial cut unsatisfactory and ordered a rework. Bennet later exited the project, and by 2023, the network officially abandoned the show.

The Leaked Trailer: A Glimpse into the Scrapped Vision

The leaked footage provided insight into the show’s tone and storyline. It showcased the Powerpuff Girls struggling with adulthood—Blossom was constantly stressed, Bubbles drowned her troubles in alcohol, and Buttercup remained rebellious. The trio had disbanded after accidentally killing the human version of Mojo Jojo, leading Blossom to flee, Bubbles to pursue a Hollywood career, and Buttercup to become a firefighter.

Years later, the girls reunite to take on Jojo Jr., now Townsville’s mayor, who had brainwashed the city and framed Professor Utonium. The trailer featured campy and meta humor, including Bubbles referencing the “Gathering of the Juggalos” and Buttercup making crude jokes about Blossom’s supposed love interest.

Mixed Reactions: Creative or Cringe?

Reactions to the leaked footage were divisive. Some viewers appreciated the show’s satirical and playful tone, while others found it overly campy and forced. A writer from Bleeding Cool praised the series for being self-aware, darkly humorous, and daringly different. However, Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken criticized the premise, arguing that aging up the characters stripped away the essence of what made them unique.

Meanwhile, Dove Cameron, in a 2023 interview with ELLE, described the experience as fun and praised Diablo Cody’s vision. However, she remained tight-lipped on specifics due to NDA restrictions.

The CW’s Decision: A “Missed” Opportunity?

At the time of the pilot’s cancellation, CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz admitted that the show simply “didn’t work.” He cited tonal inconsistencies, explaining that the project lacked the grounded realism necessary to make it resonate with audiences. While the network initially considered reworking the pilot, the project ultimately faded away.

Final Thoughts

The leaked Powerpuff footage offered a rare look at what could have been a bold but risky adaptation. While some fans lament its loss, others believe the CW made the right call in shelving it. Regardless, the debate surrounding Powerpuff highlights the challenges of adapting beloved animated properties into live-action formats. Whether this pilot will ever see an official release remains uncertain, but for now, it remains a fascinating what-if in TV history.
