DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has officially revealed that he is working on what he calls the “Superman Saga.” While promoting Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn confirmed that he has already completed a treatment for the next Superman story.

“The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter. He added that the project is not too far from going into production. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav also confirmed Gunn’s upcoming Superman-related film as part of the expanding Super-Family.

Interestingly, Gunn noted that while it may sound like a Superman sequel, it won’t be a traditional follow-up. “Is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily,” he explained in an earlier interview. This suggests that the Superman Saga could extend beyond standalone films and possibly connect to larger DCU storylines.

The Bigger DCU Picture

DC Studios has an ambitious slate for the coming years. In film, audiences can expect Supergirl and Clayface in 2026, with a new Wonder Woman to follow. Matt Reeves’ The Batman II is set to begin shooting next spring and release in December 2027. Gunn has also teased projects like Sgt. Rock, a Justice League team-up featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a new DCU Batman, ruling out Robert Pattinson’s version.

On the TV front, The Penguin Season 2 continues Reeves’ self-contained Batman Epic Crime Saga. Meanwhile, the interconnected DCU expands with Peacemaker Season 2 and the highly anticipated Lanterns series set for 2026. Gunn has even hinted at possible spinoffs for characters such as Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen after their positive reception in Superman.

All these projects fall under Chapter One of the rebooted DC Universe, titled Gods & Monsters, which Gunn and Safran announced in 2023. While there’s no confirmed end date for this chapter, Warner Bros. has expressed confidence in a 10-year DCU roadmap.

Peacemaker Season 2 Connects Directly to Superman

One of the most significant developments is how Peacemaker Season 2 will tie into the larger DCU. Gunn made it clear that Superman’s story directly leads into the events of the new season.

“Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker,” Gunn revealed. “It’s incredibly important. Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker.”

John Cena, who reprises his role as the irreverent antihero, echoed Gunn’s comments. “This season is about furthering the narrative. Instead of standalone properties, all of the DCU is now connected, as you saw Peacemaker show up in Superman,” Cena said. “I think what you see in season two is just a forward of that narrative. That whole DCU through line — it takes the 11th Street Kids through their next adventure, but it also has a lot to do with the DCU going forward.”

A New Era for the DCU

The return of Peacemaker marks a new phase for the DCU’s storytelling approach. Rather than isolated projects, Gunn and Safran are creating a connected universe where film and television feed into one another. Peacemaker Season 2 will not only continue the adventures of Cena’s character but also set the stage for future DCU arcs, tying directly into the Superman Saga.

With Superman already revitalizing interest in the DC Universe and Gunn teasing even more ambitious plans, fans can expect the DCU to lean heavily into interconnected storytelling. Whether it’s through the rise of Supergirl, the return of Wonder Woman, or the arrival of a new Batman, Gunn’s vision is slowly taking shape — and Peacemaker stands at the heart of it all.
