James Cameron’s next epic, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is gearing up for its December release — but the filmmaker is already contemplating the possibility that it might mark the end of his decades-long journey through Pandora.

The upcoming installment, the third in the Avatar franchise, faces immense pressure to deliver commercially. Each film in the series has carried an enormous production budget fueled by groundbreaking visual effects, and Disney is closely watching Fire and Ash’s box office returns to determine the fate of Avatar 4 and 5. If the film fails to bring in big profits, Cameron says he’s ready to walk away — or rather, write his way out.

Speaking on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, James Cameron revealed he’s “absolutely” prepared to close the Avatar chapter if the movie underperforms. “I’ve been in Avatar land for 20 years—actually 30 years since I first wrote it in 1995,” he said. “If this is where it ends, cool.” He shared that only one story thread will remain open after Fire and Ash, and if needed, he plans to resolve it through a book rather than another film.

Cameron made it clear that he would never hand the franchise over entirely to another filmmaker. He might stay on as producer but has no interest in seeing an Avatar movie made without his close involvement. “That’s a threshold issue for me,” he added.

Despite being confident the movie will make money, Cameron admits nerves are at play due to the current challenges facing theaters. He cited issues such as “sequelitis,” changing audience habits, and the lingering impact of streaming and COVID-19—factors that have left theater attendance at roughly 75% of pre-2019 levels. “It’s one metric ton of money, which means we have to make two metric tons of money to make a profit,” he joked, refusing to disclose the film’s official budget.

The director’s concerns aren’t unfounded. Franchises have struggled in 2025, with sequels like M3GAN 2.0 and Marvel’s Thunderbolts underperforming at the box office. Meanwhile, upcoming titles such as Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 are expected to attract strong holiday audiences, meaning Fire and Ash will face serious competition for viewers.

Still, the Avatar franchise has a formidable track record. The original 2009 film remains the highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.9 billion in earnings. Its 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, followed closely with $2.3 billion, ranking as the third-highest-grossing movie ever—just ahead of Cameron’s own Titanic.

Whether Fire and Ash can replicate that success remains uncertain, especially in a radically changed moviegoing landscape. Yet for Cameron, the story seems to be approaching a natural conclusion. If box office numbers fail to justify continuation, he may finally close the book—literally—on the world he began building three decades ago.

Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in theaters on December 19, 2025. If all goes according to plan, Avatar 4 will follow on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031, marking the end of an extraordinary cinematic saga that has spanned much of James Cameron’s life and career.
