Jack Reynor, best known for his roles in Midsommar and Transformers: Age of Extinction, has been cast as the lead in The Mummy, an upcoming horror feature directed by Lee Cronin. The film is being produced by New Line Cinema in collaboration with horror powerhouses Atomic Monster and Blumhouse.

A Fresh Take on The Mummy Franchise

Unlike previous iterations of The Mummy, Cronin has promised a new and terrifying experience for audiences. In an interview, he stated that his version will be “unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before,” teasing a deeply unsettling and ancient horror.

While plot details remain under wraps, Reynor’s character is described as a husband and father who encounters sinister supernatural forces. This hints at a more personal and psychological horror approach compared to the action-adventure style of previous adaptations.

Production and Release Details

Filming for The Mummy has officially begun in Ireland, with Cronin sharing a behind-the-scenes image of the clapperboard on social media. The film is slated for release on April 17, 2026. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are co-financing the project, with James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville serving as producers. Executive producers include Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher, while Alayna Glasthal is overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.

The Legacy of The Mummy Films

The Mummy franchise has a long cinematic history, dating back to its first appearance in 1932. However, it gained mainstream popularity with the 1999 The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The film’s success led to two sequels—The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)—as well as a spin-off, The Scorpion King (2002), featuring Dwayne Johnson.

Universal Studios attempted to reboot the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise leading a new version of The Mummy, which was intended to kickstart the Dark Universe. However, the film’s critical and commercial failure resulted in the franchise’s premature collapse.

Lee Cronin’s Horror Expertise

Director Lee Cronin has established himself as a formidable force in horror cinema. His previous works include Evil Dead Rise (2023), a successful remake that grossed $146 million against a $19 million budget, and The Hole in the Ground (2019), a well-received paranormal thriller. With Cronin at the helm, fans can expect a darker and more horrifying take on The Mummy.

What to Expect

With its promising cast, seasoned horror director, and powerhouse production teams, The Mummy reboot aims to reinvigorate the franchise with a fresh and terrifying vision. Whether it will become a modern horror classic remains to be seen, but expectations are high for this upcoming release in 2026.
