Weapon X is one of the most infamous projects in Marvel Comics history—dark, brutal, and deeply connected to several iconic characters like Wolverine and Deadpool. In this detailed breakdown, we’ll explore the full story and history of Weapon X program, its evolution over time, and its terrifying impact on mutants across the Marvel Universe.
Wolverine’s Origins: Where Weapon X Begins
The first mention of Weapon X came in The Incredible Hulk #180 (1974), which marked Wolverine’s debut. Back then, it was only hinted that Wolverine had ties to a mysterious government program. But in 1991’s Marvel Comics Presents: Weapon X arc, the curtain was pulled back—and what lay behind it was horrifying.
Weapon X, originally called Experiment X, was revealed to be responsible for grafting adamantium onto Wolverine’s skeleton, giving him his virtually indestructible body and those razor-sharp claws that can slice through anything. But the project didn’t stop at physical enhancement—they brainwashed Wolverine, stripping away his memories and humanity to mold him into a perfect killing machine.
The Scientists Behind the Project
Weapon X was operated by Canada’s Department K, under the direction of Professor Andre Thorton, often simply referred to as “The Professor.” Assisting him were:
- Dr. Abraham Cornelius
- Dr. Carol Hines
- Dr. Dale Rice
Behind the scenes was John Sublime, director of Weapon Plus—a larger initiative to create super-soldiers.
Interestingly, many of Weapon X’s methods were based on experiments recorded in the journals of Nazi scientist Nathan Essex (better known to X-Men fans as Mister Sinister), which Weapon Plus recovered after World War II.
Team X: The First Test Subjects
The early test subjects of Weapon X were members of Team X, a covert CIA black-ops group that included:
- Wolverine
- Sabretooth
- Maverick
- Silver Fox
- Maston
These individuals were given memory implants created with help from a telepathic cyborg, who traded his skills for immortality. To maintain control, Weapon X employed Shiva, a fail-safe system designed to hunt down rogue agents.

Weapon X is Part of a Bigger Plan: Weapon Plus
Here’s where it gets deeper: Weapon X wasn’t a standalone project. It was actually the tenth installment in the Weapon Plus program, which dates back to the 1940s. This broader initiative aimed to develop super-soldiers and assassins for the U.S. military.
Fun fact: Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, was the result of Weapon I—the very first project within Weapon Plus.
Wolverine’s Rampage and the Fallout
Weapon X’s horrific tampering eventually triggered a violent rampage from Wolverine. He slaughtered numerous scientists and soldiers in the facility—including Dr. Dale Rice—and freed other test subjects. The chaos forced the facility to shut down temporarily.
But like all dangerous ideas, Weapon X didn’t stay buried. It reemerged in new forms, each darker than the last.
Failed Experiments and X-23
Following Wolverine’s escape, Weapon X sought to recreate their success. These efforts included:
- The Native – a feral woman with similar traits to Wolverine
- Kamura
- X-23 – the 23rd attempt to clone Wolverine
X-23, later known as Laura Kinney, was raised and trained to assassinate Wolverine, but instead found her own path. She joined the X-Men, became a daughter figure to Logan, and eventually took up his mantle as Wolverine.
Weapon X Under Department K: Enter Deadpool
Eventually, Weapon X split completely from Weapon Plus and became controlled by Canada’s Department K. This version of Weapon X created a new generation of agents, including:
- Deadpool (Wade Wilson)
- Garrison Kane (Weapon X)
- Slayback
- Sluggo
- Wild
- Ajax
This version of the program used Wolverine’s DNA to replicate healing factors. But many of the experiments failed. These failed subjects were sent to a secret facility for dissection—until Deadpool escaped and freed them all.
Malcolm Kord and the Darkest Chapter
The third version of Weapon X took a sinister turn under Malcolm Kord, a former security guard from the original program who suffered facial injuries during Wolverine’s escape. Now filled with rage and revenge, Kord restructured Weapon X to serve one chilling goal: eliminate all mutants.
This version was fully U.S.-based and even created death camps like Neverland—where mutants were imprisoned. Those deemed unsuitable for military purposes were executed, while others were given a horrifying choice: join Weapon X or die.
Agents in this version included:
- Agent Brent Jackson (former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent)
- Sabretooth (with new adamantium implants)
- Copycat (a shapeshifter)
- Deadpool
- Malice
Although Deadpool eventually went rogue, the program continued recruiting and brainwashing new members, enhancing their powers and forcing them into service.

Agent Zero: From Maverick to Assassin
One key figure during this era was Maverick, who initially refused to join Weapon X. After nearly being killed by Sabretooth and a second offer from Kord, Maverick gave in. He was enhanced and rebranded as Agent Zero, assigned to kill Wolverine.
Fun trivia: Agent Zero was created by legendary artist Jim Lee.
Weapon X Becomes Xavier’s Legacy
After the events of Avengers vs. X-Men, Cyclops and his team took over the abandoned Weapon X facility. They transformed it into the New Charles Xavier School, giving it a redemptive purpose as a refuge and training ground for young mutants.
