Fans of the grimdark Warhammer 40,000 universe have been hanging on for dear life, waiting for any scrap of news about Henry Cavill’s ambitious live-action adaptation. Announced over three years ago in a deal between Games Workshop and Amazon, the project—envisioned as the start of a full cinematic universe—has been shrouded in silence. Now, in the company’s latest financial report, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree has finally spilled the beans, and it’s not exactly the hype train fans were hoping for.

Rountree confirmed the series is still chugging along in development with partners Amazon MGM Studios, Henry Cavill, and Vertigo Entertainment. But here’s the kicker: Games Workshop has zero say over when we’ll actually see it on screen. “Our live-action endeavor is still in development with our partners,” he explained. “It is the nature of these things to take several years, and while we wish we could tie down a release the way we can with our core business, the reality is that, as with any licensing deal, delivery is not in our control. We leave it to our partners to manage their own businesses.” In other words, Amazon calls the shots, and fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a quick turnaround.

This update is bittersweet. Sure, it means the project hasn’t been axed or dumped in a drawer somewhere—no cancellation news is good news, right? But for those craving details like a cast announcement, production start date, or even a peek at Cavill’s storyline vision, it’s radio silence. The tabletop game, created by Games Workshop and designer Rick Priestley back in 1987 (with its latest edition dropping in 2023), has exploded in popularity, especially in the UK, and Cavill’s passion has kept the buzz alive.

Speaking of Cavill, the Man of Steel alum isn’t just starring—he’s executive producing alongside Vertigo and his partner Natalie Viscuso. They pitched the cinematic universe idea to Amazon in 2022, securing the rights soon after, with a TV series as the flagship. Cavill’s fandom runs deep; he’s been geeking out over Warhammer 40,000 for years. In a June 2025 Esquire interview, he gushed about the challenges: “It is a tricky IP, and a very complex IP. And that’s what I love about it. The challenges that come with putting this on the page in a way that is doing justice to that complexity, that trickiness, and that nuance, is a challenge I’m enjoying enormously.” He called it a “dream come true,” especially since he’s steering the ship for the first time.

Even in 2024, Cavill dropped a tantalizing tease: “My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world… Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret.” Games Workshop echoed the excitement, noting they’re cooking up “exciting projects that will bring Warhammer to screens like never before.”

No premiere date in sight yet, but with Cavill at the helm, this could be the epic adaptation Warhammer deserves. Fingers crossed Amazon doesn’t keep us in the 41st millennium purgatory much longer.
