In an exciting casting announcement, Deadline confirms that Eve Ridley, known for her role in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, has landed a major role in DCU’s upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Ridley will portray Ruthye Marye Knolle, a character from Tom King’s 2022 comic series, which has been adapted for the screen by Ana Nogueira. This anticipated film is directed by Craig Gillespie, whose past work includes I, Tonya and Cruella.
A Heroine’s Quest for Justice
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows the story of Ruthye Marye Knolle, a noble young warrior who, after the murder of her father by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, embarks on an intergalactic journey to bring him to justice. Her path intersects with that of Supergirl, and the two form a powerful alliance in their shared quest. In the comic, Knolle is portrayed as a determined and honorable character, marking an exciting and complex role for Ridley.
Deadline previously reported that Rust and Bone actor Matthias Schoenaerts would portray Krem, bringing further intensity to the antagonist role. Meanwhile, House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock has been cast as Supergirl, a title role expected to debut in another DCU project before Alcock takes center stage in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
A Talented Team: Nogueira and Gillespie
Ana Nogueira, making her debut as a feature film screenwriter, adapted Tom King’s beloved comic series for the big screen. Although her background is more extensive in acting and playwriting, Nogueira’s script reportedly captured the depth and nuance of King’s original story, earning high praise from DC Studios. “It’s above and beyond anything I hoped it to be,” James Gunn, DC Studios co-head, commented enthusiastically about the script.
Adding his seasoned directorial vision is Craig Gillespie, celebrated for his work with Hollywood stars Margot Robbie and Emma Stone. With his ability to deliver nuanced characters, Gillespie is set to bring a darker, more contemplative tone to this Supergirl story.
DCU’s Growing Lineup Under Gunn and Safran
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, as part of DCU’s next-generation lineup under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The movie will be the second DCU film, following Superman starring David Corenswet, which is scheduled for release in July 2025. Creature Commandos, an animated series premiering on Max in December 2024, will officially kick off DCU’s new phase, “Gods & Monsters,” with Gunn spearheading the project.
Supergirl’s storyline promises a stark contrast to Superman’s origin, as Gunn previously explained on social media: “Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, while Supergirl in this story is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”
Eve Ridley’s Growing Career
Eve Ridley, who portrays Follower in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, is making a significant leap with her role as Ruthye. In addition to her Netflix role, she has appeared in Casualty and voiced characters in animated series like Isadora Moon and Little Baby Bum: Music Time. The casting of Ruthye Marye Knolle marks Ridley’s feature film debut, signaling her growing presence in the industry.
The DC Universe’s Expanding Roster
With new stories and characters steadily joining DCU, fans can look forward to a universe that promises depth, action, and nuanced heroes and villains. The Penguin series on HBO, part of the DC universe and featuring Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot, continues to break records, pulling in 1.8 million U.S. viewers cross-platform on October 20.
