In 1988, DC Comics introduced what would become one of the DC Comics Most Offensive Villain Ever. The storyline not only pushed the boundaries of acceptable themes but also left many readers in sheer disbelief by its conclusion.

The Prelude: A New Era of Heroes

The story begins with the introduction of The Chosen, a group of superheroes comprising women and minorities. This ensemble symbolized a progressive step towards diversity and inclusivity in the superhero genre, an aspect that, surprisingly, was not the focal point of controversy. Instead, the discord stemmed from the antagonist of the tale, Janwillem Kroef, a character designed to challenge the very essence of heroism and morality.

Janwillem Kroef: A Villain Like No Other

Janwillem Kroef, initially one of The Chosen, is expelled by the Guardians for embodying the vile ideologies of white supremacy. His character takes a dark turn when he aligns with a group in South Africa, revealing the depth of his malevolence. He comes across a captured villain, Hemo Goblin, a vampire-like entity. Jan Willam’s interaction with Hemo Goblin unveils his racist ideology, where he articulates a warped vision of the world that necessitates the domination of the white race to maintain quality of life for all.

Hemo Goblin’s Rampage

Following Janwillem Kroef’s incitement, Hemo Goblin targets women and minorities, initiating his onslaught with an attack on Jet, a member of The Chosen. Despite Jet’s resilience, she is gravely wounded, marking the beginning of Hemo Goblin’s terror. The narrative intensifies when another hero, Gloss, sensing Jet’s distress, intervenes, leading to a temporary retreat by Hemo Goblin.

A Battle of Ideals

As the story unfolds, the remaining members of The Chosen, including Floro and Extrano (the latter representing LGBTQ+ superheroes), gather to confront the aftermath of Hemo Goblin’s attacks. Utilizing Floro’s connection to the natural world, they track down their adversary, leading to a climactic confrontation at a seemingly mundane location: the Hilton Hotel at an airport.

The Shocking Finale

The final battle sees the united force of The Chosen overpowering Hemo Goblin. However, the story takes a grim turn when it’s revealed that Hemo Goblin was afflicted with AIDS, which he had been transmitting to his victims. This revelation was the aspect that catapulted the narrative to infamy, intertwining the real-world AIDS crisis with comic book villainy in a manner many found to be in poor taste.
