Daniel Radcliffe recently opened up about a new HBO documentary that he produced, focusing on the life of his former Harry Potter stunt double, David Holmes. Titled ‘David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived’, the documentary showcases Holmes, who is now 42, and his journey before and after a severe on-set injury in 2009 that left him paralyzed from the chest down.
The film features dramatic scenes, such as Holmes evading fiery blasts and performing intricate broomstick stunts as Harry Potter, juxtaposed with his current life. Holmes, reflecting on his past in the documentary, remarks, “I used to fly. Not so much anymore.”
Radcliffe, 34, expressed his admiration for Holmes, saying, “I wanted to make something about Dave for years because he’s extraordinary and I wanted to share that with the world.” He initially attempted to direct the documentary himself but realized he needed professional help. Enter Dan Hartley, a former video operator on the Harry Potter films, who helped refocus the project on Holmes’ personal story.
The documentary also marks a reunion for many who worked on the Harry Potter series. Producers Vanessa Davies and Amy Stares, who served as the Potter films’ publicist and assistant director, respectively, joined the team. Holmes describes the project as a chance to work with his Harry Potter ‘family’ again.
The film revolves around the accident that drastically changed Holmes’ life while filming a stunt for the last two Harry Potter movies. Today, Holmes, a wheelchair user and host of the Cunning Stunts podcast, emphasizes the importance of his legacy extending beyond the accident. He hasn’t watched the documentary yet, stating he’s not ready but trusts in the love and sensitivity with which it was made.
Holmes’ journey since the accident has been challenging, involving multiple hospital visits and physical therapy sessions. He finds solace in storytelling through film and TV, using it as a coping mechanism. He anticipates a future where he’ll reflect on his life with the optimism he currently holds.
Radcliffe is confident that the documentary does justice to Holmes’ story, having received positive feedback from Holmes’ friends, family, and peer support group in the disabled community. Holmes stresses the importance of accurate disability representation and is reassured by the positive reactions from diverse members of the disabled community, who find the film empowering.
This documentary not only tells the story of a remarkable individual but also highlights the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
