Fans of Creature Commandos can rejoice as Season 2 is officially in development. Showrunner Dean Lorey recently confirmed that the team has already started working on the next chapter of the animated series. While speaking with The Direct to promote Harley Quinn Season 5, Lorey revealed that the writers’ room is actively breaking the story for the upcoming season.

“Yeah. I mean, it’s still early days, but we are actively working on breaking the season and starting to figure that out. So it’s definitely moving forward,” Lorey shared. “I mean, it’s like, they put it on a fast track, and they seem to mean it. So, yeah, we’re in it.”

Max and DC Studios renewed Creature Commandos for a second season in December 2024, just weeks after the first season aired. This rapid renewal signals strong confidence in the series and its future within James Gunn’s larger DCU plans.

New Roster for Task Force M

While the storyline for Season 2 remains under wraps, the Season 1 finale introduced a revamped Creature Commandos team. With Rick Flag Sr. and Nina leaving the squad, the new lineup features:

  • The Bride (Indira Varma)
  • Doctor Phosphorus
  • Weasel
  • G.I. Robot
  • Nosferata
  • Khalis
  • King Shark (a Suicide Squad fan-favorite)

Lorey confirmed that these new members were chosen because they seemed like fun additions for the upcoming season. “Those are all characters that we think would be really fun in the season. And James [Gunn] wrote all the episodes last season. So those were his instincts, which are pretty good,” he said.

He also emphasized that G.I. Robot will have a major role in Season 2, calling the character’s “beefed-up” form a must-have for the new season.

When Will Season 2 Be Released?

The biggest question for fans is how long they will have to wait for new episodes. Looking at the timeline of Season 1, James Gunn completed the scripts in late 2022, and animation took nearly two years before the series debuted on December 5, 2024. If Season 2 follows a similar schedule, the next batch of episodes may not arrive until late 2026 or even 2027.

However, since Creature Commandos is already in early development and on a “fast track,” there’s a possibility the process could be quicker this time. Still, animation is a time-consuming medium, making a long wait likely.

How This Fits Into the DCU

Creature Commandos was the first project in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, setting the stage for future animated and live-action projects. The series introduced a mix of new and familiar characters, with some expected to transition into live-action appearances later on.

With Season 2 in motion, fans can expect even more supernatural, sci-fi, and action-packed storytelling to expand Gunn’s DCU vision.

What’s Next for DC Animation?

Aside from Creature Commandos, DC Animation is thriving with Harley Quinn Season 5 currently airing. This season moves Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Ivy (Lake Bell) to Metropolis, where they face off against Lex Luthor, Lena Luthor, and Brainiac. The season finale is set for March 20, 2025.

Meanwhile, anticipation remains high for Creature Commandos Season 2. While the wait may be long, the early development progress suggests that fans will get another thrilling chapter sooner rather than later.

For now, all episodes of Creature Commandos Season 1 are available to stream on Max.
