Marvel Studios has officially announced the cast for its highly anticipated film, “The Fantastic Four,” setting the stage for a fresh interpretation of one of its cornerstone superhero teams. Directed by Matt Shakman, known for his work on “WandaVision,” the film has been subject to intense speculation and anticipation, culminating in the reveal of its star-studded cast: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. This announcement not only confirms previous reports and rumors but also marks a significant milestone in the journey to bring “The Fantastic Four” back to the big screen under the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) banner.
Pedro Pascal, who has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors with roles in “The Last of Us,” “The Mandalorian,” and more, takes on the role of the brilliant scientist and leader of the Fantastic Four, Reed Richards. Vanessa Kirby, celebrated for her performances in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and receiving an Oscar nomination for “Pieces of a Woman,” will portray Sue Storm, known for her ability to become invisible and generate force fields. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, recently acclaimed for his role in Hulu’s “The Bear,” will embody Ben Grimm, a character transformed into the rock-like creature known as The Thing. Lastly, Joseph Quinn, recognized for his role in “Stranger Things” and set to appear in “Gladiator 2,” will play the hot-headed and fiery Johnny Storm.
The casting concludes a long period of speculation and fan casting, notably addressing the brief portrayal of Reed Richards by John Krasinski in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and setting a new direction for the characters in the MCU. The film’s release date has been set for July 25, 2025, following a strategic reshuffle of Marvel’s release calendar, which also sees “Thunderbolts” moving to an earlier date.
“The Fantastic Four” has a storied history, both in the Marvel comics universe, where it was introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961, and in its cinematic endeavors, which have seen varying degrees of success and critical reception over the years. The upcoming film aims to rectify past missteps and fully integrate the team into the MCU, benefiting from the acquisition of Fox by Disney.
Under the direction of Matt Shakman and with a screenplay initially penned by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer, later revised by Josh Friedman of “Avatar: The Way of Water” fame, “The Fantastic Four” is poised to offer a unique take on the superhero team. Marvel Studios has indicated that the film will not be an origin story but will draw inspiration from various sources, including “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” reflecting Shakman’s diverse directing portfolio.
As “The Fantastic Four” joins Marvel’s Phase 5, anticipation continues to build around how these beloved characters will be reimagined and how they will fit into the broader narrative of the MCU. With a promising cast and creative team, Marvel Studios seems set to deliver a rendition of “The Fantastic Four” that could finally do justice to the iconic team’s legacy.
